So my dad has a side by side shot gun and the only markings on it are: P. Zieschang Bautzen

Nothing else marked anywhere. Did a interweb search and nothing. Any gurus out there got anything?

Found a genealogy of a Peter Zieschang who was born in Germany in 1827. Died in Noack,TX in 1910....could possibly be a link, maybe his gun at one time???~~~~"Founded Noack, Texas. Peter Zieschang traveled from Saxony on the ship Bielefeld to Melborne or Portland, Victoria, Australia. There he joined the Hochkirch settlement(founded in 1853). Peter's first wife Magdalena (nee Rentsch) died in Tarrington, Australia. He then traveled back to Saxony. Then he went from Saxony to Texas. In 1870 he settled at Fiskville, Travis, Texas near Pflugerville, Texas. He later moved to what is now Noack, Texas. He gave the land for Hochkirch which was founded in 1895, north of Taylor on Brushy Creek. He founded the town of Noack in 1872 and named it for a Mr. Noack, a prominent settler and the postmaster. Land sold for $5.00 per acre around Noack when Peter bought land there, which was 10 times more than land near Serbin at the time."???and I looked up the word Bautzen and it is a town in Germany, in that era of his life was controlled by the Kingdom of Saxony and then the German Empire.

Yep all I could find was the name Zieschang in the city of Bautzen. The rest was all written in German.

It's likely from a small maker, check the proof marks, they should be German or Prussian. Bautzen is in Saxony as is the arms making center of Suhl. In England while Birmingham and London were the main arms making centers there were numerous gunmakers in other cities and towns. Bautzen was a textile center so it should have had good train service to Dresden as Suhl would have. Being less than 100 miles apart, sourcing semi finished parts, would have been fairly easy.

What makes this all puzzling is that we don't know where my dad got this gun. He passed away in September so we don't have a clue. My moms side of the family came from the Noack-Fedor area and my mom looked and said there are a few Ziechang's in the family tree. But my mom don't remember my dad getting a gun from anyone on her side of the family, but who knows.
nsmike- I cannot locate any marks on the gun besides the P. Ziechang Bautzen that is engraved between the barrels, and its not stamped or scratched in with a nail or anything, its very percise (also puzzling). I would think in the late 1800's early 1900's it would be stamped or rough looking. I'm scared to dismantle it to look for any other marks not to damage it. But with this info I might break it down and see if there is anything.

Proof marks would most likely be on th barrel flats which means breaking down the gun. You also have to include the possibility it was brought back after WWII. Here's a page that shows what they look like http://www.hallowellco.com/proof_marks_of_various_countries.htm

take the furnature off the gun and look for other marks.

I looked at the gun again. Nsmike, thanks for the link. From what I found it kinda matches the Belgian one on the link. It has the circle with ELG and a star. And the only other thing that matches is it has a small star and a H below it. It has some other squiggly stuff that isn't found anywhere on the link and can't tell what it is. There is a number on the other side, either 168 or 891, can't tell which way it suppose to be.
It really is cool trying to figure out this gun but also frustrating. I'd give a lot of money to hear Paul Harvey do the rest of the story on it.

The next thing to do is google up information on Belgian proof marks. A lot of low to medium price guns were made in Belgium with the name of the retailer on them.

How about some pictures of the gun and markings. That might help with identifying. My dad ended up with an old side by side that came from my great grandfather. It's from the late 1800's with hammers. Wish I knew more about it too. Good luck on your search.
