I recently picked up an AR to use for a lot of applications. Mostly hogs and targets out to 500yds. From what I've researched, I don't really think a tactical scope is what I want. My deer rifle is a 3x9 and I sometimes have trouble seeing details at 9x. So a 1x4 or 1x6 probably isn't a good fit. My budget is in the 3-400 range. I've looked at the Vortex Crossfire II and several others in that range (there's really too much to choose from in that range). What about the Burris MTAC? It's a little more but is there a big difference? What do you suggest?

Actually I think a 1-4x or 1-6x is the perfect scope for an AR. I run a 1-4x Trijicon Accupoint and only thing Id replace it with is a 1-6x

Probably not if we wants to shoot out to 500 yards. I know it can be done, but it's not ideal. I'd go with a 3-15 if I was you.

Thanks for the replies! Is it hard to pick up targets when rapid firing at full zoom? I've done it with open sights at 200 & 300 yds but that was 20 plus years ago in the Corps. I still shoot open sight 30-30 but only within 100yds. Getting old sucks, especially when you have to start squinting.

You can get a DEMO SWFA 3-15 SFP in your budget range, usually $399. Yes, it's tactical, but if you're going to 500 yards on small targets, you're gonna need it. Get on their sample email list and watch for one. SWFA 3-15

I run an MTAC on and AR and it is a great scope. However, if you are looking to regularly shoot 300 plus you will find it lacking. If you turn on illumination and keep at 1x it is almost as fast as a red dot sub 50, where it really shines is 50 to 300 IMO. If you are looking for 300 plus the XTR II FiremanJG suggested would be a great choice. The XTR II series is a solid performer.

I'm happy with my VX-R 2-7x33. I don't do any target shooting though, I just hunt.
Don’t roll those bloodshot eyes at me.

FiremanJG, that XTR looks awesome. I'll have to save up for awhile. Took a look at your website. I'm going to contact you in the spring for a class.

Vortex Viper 4-12x40 or Burris AR 4.5-14 is right in your price range.

I've got a Leupold Mark AR 4-12x40 somewhere that I haven't been using if that's something you're interested in.
Shoot me a PM if you're interested and it would fit what you're looking for. Nothing wrong with it but I replaced it with a FFP scope as I got a great price on one.
If you do go the more tactical route Primary Arms might have some good offerings. They don't compete with Swarovski or US Optics but they have great stuff for the price and you can get FFP at a reasonable price range also.
