Heavy .308 with a brake (minimal recoil) shooting off a front bipod with a back bag.
After quite a few rounds (100 - 150) I noticed the scope had crept forward about 1/4 inch in the rings and the power adjustment on the scope was touching the base. I loosened the ring screws (all 6 on each ring felt good and tight), moved the scope back to normal, and torqued the screws to manufacturer's specs. Went to the range to re-zero and immediately noticed the scope creeping forward again. Within 10 shots it was again touching the base. I had my torque wrench with me so I again loosened the screws, moved the scope back, and torqued the screws to slightly over the specs - about an extra 2 inch pounds. Again after several shots the scope began moving forward. I've got a new set of Seekins rings on order, but I still can't figure out what is going on. The rings I'm having problems with are the Vortex Tacticals. I've used them on a couple of other rifles without any complaints. Ideas?

2 things- the rings are too loose or the scope is too small in the rings. What are you torquing the rings to?

A possible fix...you could remove the top half of each ring and lap the mating surfaces, but I'd really think about it a lot more before trying it.

Question for you folks. I do not have a torque driver, how does one not over tighten the screws? Don't mean to hyjack thread.

I finger tighten everything. I don't over tighten, but it's secured down tight. After doing the torque multiple times, you get a feel for it.

I'll get flamed for this statement, but I'm not sold on Vortex products. I've personally seen 2 of their scopes fail and 1 set of rings that were way out of spec. Is this also a Vortex scope? Have you got other rings you can substitute?

Depends on the vortex rings, the PMR rings are made by seeking. All my guns wear seekins rings except 1 spuhr mount

Vortex, Ruger, DNZ ....... any manufacturer can put out 1 bad product.
I still say replace the rings.
Unless this is a crap economy brand scope, that is.

2 things- the rings are too loose or the scope is too small in the rings. What are you torquing the rings to? Are there gaps when the rings are torqued, or do they fully meet? If they're meeting, the scope is too small and you'll either need new rings, a new scope, or shims.

I heard a guy say use one of these: Insert the long end into the screw so that you can only tighten with the short end. Using thumb and forefinger ONLY, tighten them as tight as you can, and that should be about right, give or take.

The scope is a Viper HST sitting on a 20MOA EGW rail and I originally torqued the rings to just under 20 in/lbs (specs call for 15 - 18). After the scope moved the second time, I torqued to 22 in/lbs and it was still moving. My new Seekins rings should be here today or tomorrow, so this discussion is more about gathering information than anything else.

That's one of the things I always check and there was a nice even gap about the thickness of a fingernail on each side of each ring.

I think your buddies applied Teflon to the scope and rings when you weren't looking!
