We had our classic fishing trips down to one of our favorite places near East Matagorda Bay, called Chinquapin, this last weekend. It's a little bayou place just South of Lake Austin. We have been going here since the 90's, and the cabin belongs to a good college friend of mine from Southwest Texas State. This trip there were about 8-10 of us. The cabin is located on the bayou and has a cabin and fishing dock. Here, you fish at night with bright lights shined down into the water. The lights bring in the bait fish, which bring in the trout and reds. We catch live shrimp with casting nets during the day to fish with them at night. You fish with live shrimp and a cork with a leader of about 12", and cast where your bait drifts across the lights. About 1 out of 3 casts you will catch a fish when it's good. The first night was a little slow. The second night it was decent and we caught about 20 keepers. The 3rd night we hammered them!

On the second night, fishing was a little slow, so there was a lot of beer/alcohol consumed. About bed time, someone decided to make a turkey sandwich. The next morning, the half eaten cheese only sandwich was left on the counter with the turkey, mayo, cheese, and bread still open. The picture of the sandwich tells the tale. Someone forgot to remove the parchment paper in the cheese! We laughed until we cried on this one!

The 3rd night, Sat night, was on like Donkey Kong. We made steaks and finished up dinner about 9:15. Everyone headed to the dock to fish. We had choreographed a little fish dance movement of casting on the right and shuffling to the left on the dock. The current was moving to the left, so you cast your bait on the right, and it drifted to the left. As it moved left, you moved left on the small dock, gave room to the next person to cast on the right and fish. We could fish about 4-5 people at a time this way, and it got very busy on the small dock when multiple people had fish on at the same time. As it got later, people dropped off and went to bed. I was in it for the long haul. I was determined to pull an all-nighter and see the dawn of the morning, which I had never done. My brother was last, and went to bed about 4 am. I stayed up, and fishing was up and down. About an hour before sun up, the fishing was so hot, I couldn't keep bait on the hook. I caught tons of small reds and trout, but landed a couple good one's. We had plenty of fish in the cooler, so most everything I threw back. It slowed down for about 10 minutes, and I caught myself doing the sleepy head bob up and down. About that time, I noticed a little brightness in the sky. Dawn was approaching!!! The guys getting up to go fishing in the boat were shocked that I made it all night. The interesting thing is I didn't have a drop alcohol all night. I nursed about half of a 2 liter of Diet Mountain Dew throughout the night. It was one of the best nights fishing I have ever had. Sitting on the dock under the bright stars, watching numerous shooting stars, catching tons of fish being around several of my best friends, and my 2 brothers. This was one of those epic trips!! (Thanks for reading!!)
