Me and another guy on the lease were talking about culls

What is your definition of culls?

The specifics of it will depend on the lease and management plan in place.

A cull is an animal that you no longer want to feed IMO.

Agree that is the winner...

But what do you evaluate?

A cull is a deer that you shot at 50 yards with your scope dialed up to 14 and then he "shrunk" when you ground checked him.

BoBo hit the nail on the head. If you shoot a Buck that may not be "mature" in the eyes on here that know everything you call it a cull so to not be ridiculed.

It all seems to depend on who you are talking to and how they view what is a cull.
I've posted this before, but we hunted next to a small ranch where I would talk to the guys hunting that property and one day asked what they shot since I heard several shots in their direction.
They said they shot a couple of bucks but they are shooting culls.
OK.....As I went on about my business, and a couple weeks later I saw a big 8 that had broken off his G2 on one side and the tip off the main beam.
I saw the buck a few times and it was a big buck that would have been a nice trophy.
The deer one morning showed up and passed by my stand and headed in the direction of those other hunters property. A few minutes pass and BOOOM!
Another one bites the dust! roflmao

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

Yelp pretty much sums it up. End of the day you only have so many tools and tags.

Cleric-Knowing a little bit of history on your place. Set your sights on a 6.5 or older deer. Solely work for that and rest well fall in place.

I have hunted a lot of places and think I have just about seen it all when it comes to culling. One thing I have learned is that people will make every excuse in the world to cull their way into another nice buck.

Hunted one place where a guy would cull bucks if their G3's were longer than their G2's. Seen places where they will cull anything less than 10 points. Hunted places where all spikes were culls regardless of age. Seen people try to pass off bucks as culls because their brow tines are farther up on the main beams than normal. Seen people shoot nice broken rack deer and call them culls because they "thought he was deformed". Seen people try to cull long tined 10 points because they felt the width was lacking. Saw a guy on one place use both buck tags opening morning then set out with his wife to "cull some Does".......they came back with the best 8 point of the year and of course it was an "accident". Seen people try to cull bucks with a nice rack simply because they are older even though they meet the trophy definition of a ranch. This was all free range!

Without a solid cull policy in place it will become a free for all unless you truly have a management minded group of hunters.

Cull - A term used by those who feel they must justify their harvest because it doesn't meet the definition of what others might call a trophy.

Before the days of "horn porn", there were no culls in the deer hunting community.

bs Culls have been around as long as management.

Some people truly cull. Other hunters have picked up the term to justify killing an additional buck.

I refer to them as genetically challenged bucks.

I believe word cull came from cattle ranches who were managing their deer herds in South Texas. They cull out older cows or poor quality from the herd during bad times. So the term stuck with management to cull down numbers. It then was used more with the buck side thru the years now to cull out the lower end of the age class.

It's ones thought of something that is not what needs to be or up to spec.. Nothing more nothing less..

To me when someone says cull they don't have age in mind... Cull simply means to much of a good thing but one has to go and this one falls short..

I think cull is Spanish for another deer in the freezer.
