Staying scent free is a must in my book.

I wash my sleesping bags and every piece of clothing I wear at the lease. Plus I bring unscented baby wipes, unscented bar soap and unscented deodorant. Plus spray bottle of coverscent.

Notice the laundry detergent is very over priced as well as the bar soaps and other hygiene unscented products made by hunting companies are just so overpriced.

I buy the regular fragrance free detergents and bar soap from Wal-Mart for half the price of that overpriced hunting stuff.

I Feed Indian Corn. The deer love it and all the colors make them stay at the feeder longer.

I do scent free everything I can, but poop happens a lot of times before you get there.
I break of a branch of a cedar tree and swipe my clothes etc. down before I hunt up

Scent free is a myth. It is a gun control scam started by the left wing democrats to try and rob the Republican hunters of cash.

I hunted on a ranch a few years ago and there was a family there that took the scent free pretty seriously. They would put their hunting clothes in rubber containers so that they wouldn't get "contaminated." This was the first and last time I saw someone take the scent free to any level, guess what, we killed the exact same amount of deer.

I've gotten a whole scent free kit after season as well for under $10.

There are alternatives to the high priced products out there. I use Speed Stick unscented and Neutragena unscented bar soap. There are also unscented detergents but they last so long that I just pony up for the sport wash products.

Field and Stream magazine debunked "scent free" clothing claims. You can never eliminate
your scent, but rather, you can reduce it a little. They did an experiment with a drug sniffing
dog and the dog found the hunter wearing scent free clothes every time. I think it's
a good practice to try to reduce your scent to some degree and always hunt with the
wind in your face. I use to buy that high dollar scent free clothing,..but no more.
I still kill the same amount of deer whether stinky or clean. As a matter of fact,
I just killed a mule deer last week in NM and hadn't showered for 3 days.

Don't pay any attention to folks who chide you about getting clean. It is a good practice and one I've always subscribed to. Even IF it isn't necessary in EVERY hunting situation, it remains a good practice.

Yes, you can sit downwind 150 yards from a feeder and snipe a deer, provided they entered upwind of you. You could smell like a skunk and that would still work.

But I'd challenge those same folks to get in a hanging stand in heavily wooded area with the thermals settling in the evening...and try to get a 'mature' buck within 40 yards.

Not everyone hunts under the same conditions. Scent 'control' (to the degree it is possible) is never a bad thing.

Plenty of hunters that hunt the same spot over and over have been 'busted' AFTER they leave their stand/hunting site and never know it. Because of scent they left behind when entering or leaving. And because they never saw the deer that pattered them...they think its all working for them.

Naturally I advocate using the wind to your advantage, but sometimes the wind changes directions, or terrain feature cause an otherwise straight-line wind to swirl. I'd rather be clean (offering LESS scent) under those conditions than to be in two day old stinky clothing or be unclean of body.

If circumstance permits...it is always better to put off as little scent as is possible or practical.

Spend enough time in an area, and they'll get used to you. Every time I'm at the lease (typically just weekends) I'll check the cameras. That scent blocker stuff is just another gimmick in the hunting world IMO. I've never used any kind of scent blocker and have had deer walk 10 yards in front of my stand. 2 years ago I shot a mature 8 point 24 yards from the stand. He didn't seem bothered by what I was wearing. My hunting clothes get washed with All, the same stuff my everyday clothes get done with. 2 weeks ago I had a doe and twins 10 yards from my stand with me poking my head out the window taking pictures of them with my phone. That stand is in a hole of dense woods, so the wind is constantly swirling around.

Scent lok, and the other brands that supposedly do the same thing are a farce. As others have said, play the wind, it's the only reliable choice.

I hunt on our working ranch. Deer here are used to humans, trucks, tractors, etc. I still manage to put my limit on the ground every year without changing my personal hygiene products or laundry detergent. I do hunt the wind for the most part.

None of that stuff is worth a dime. It's just good marketing to get your money. If you breathe, you put your scent in the air. Work the wind and the sun, it's free and works.

I am in the same boat as the fella's that don't buy into scent free, sprays, etc. I have hunted with guys that are religious about it...scent blocker suits, rubber boots, a pill that keeps your from sweating, shower in scent free soap and shampoo, clothes stayed in a vacuum sealed bag with cedar chips, changed clothes in the field, used cover scent at their stands, and use Ozonics...guess what, they still got busted.

I don't think anyone is stupid for doing it. Nothing wrong with trying to get a slight advantage in any situation. If nothing else, maybe that deer will pause for a moment instead of bolting.

Also, I am a bow hunter 95% of the time, so I do get them in close.

Heck, my father is one of the most successful bow hunters I know and he smokes in the stand and wears his everyday work boots and clothes to the stand. He also has one of the most consistent stands on the Texas lease for mature deer year after year.

I see some didn't actually bother to read the OT or just glanced at it.
I buy free and clear ALL laundry soap, fragrance free body soap and unscented deodorant.
Only thing hunting related bought from a hunting company is coverscent spray.

I also use a ladder stand that's strapped to a tree, not gonna be moving it to hunt the wind.

Or maybe everyone continued the discussion to include coverscents, clothing and other items that people also use to be "scent free" based on the title and first sentence and veered away from the topic of getting scent free stuff cheaper cheers
