I am leaving for my ranch on Thursday. My guess is that I will see at least a dozen trucks pulling deer blinds and feeders between Katy and Del Rio. Always fun to see the rookies traveling to their leases.
On the way back, I expect to see at least 3 or 4 bucks, hanging over truck tailgates. Spoiled venison coming up!

Love the drive before the opening weekend. The "look at that rig" or " I would love to have that ATV setup" drive. Nothing like shopping for next year's gear as you drive grin

Probably more like two dozen. Hundreds on Friday. And hundreds on Sunday.

I remember reading an article about 25 years ago... There was a small symphony orchestra from somewhere in Europe doing a tour. They had performed in Houston on a Thursday and Friday was the travel day to San Antonio, on big buses. It just so happened that the Friday was the day before Deer Season opened. Some of them thought war had been declared or a revolution had started from all the cammo gear and equipment and such.
When it was explained that it was just hunters they were just as dumbfounded realizing all those guys had guns.

I saw 20 or 30 blinds headed west last weekend when I was on my way back to DFW from Cisco.I'm sure there will be more this weekend.

Same, here and I did not go all the way to Cisco, but stopped my trip in Eastland. I don't understand if they can't put their blinds & feeders up until now or Why there so late doing so?

We replaced a blind last year on Sunday of opening weekend. Basically built it on the platform. The old blind was not huntable at this point. Sometimes life is busy. Not ideal but you gotta do what you gotta do. Deer were at the feeder the next day and didn't miss a beat. We had 7 other ones to hunt.

The highway sights I notice the most during hunting season is the enormous amount of trash and other obvious hunting camp debris strewn all over the roadsides.
That and all sorts of stuff not secured to trailer or pickup bed that falls off / blows out.

Not uncommon at all!
That is why I don't take my deer to a processor, and I do it myself.

As for waiting for the last minutes.....Its not just "rookies". As someone earlier said, Sometimes life gets in the way. A few years back, we build a new box blind for my 70 year old Dad. Unfortunately, we couldn't get the trailer, the people, the everything lined up in time. It sat in his driveway from Labor Day weekend until the 2nd week of the season. It got loaded up on the trailer, driven down to the lease on a Wednesday. It was then that he realized that he and his hunting partner (also 70+) had no way to unload it until the rest of us got down Friday night. He just drove it to where he was going to hunt, dropped the trailer there and hunted out of the blind on the trailer.

No way to hunt, right? Well, he shot an old scrub buck out of it before we got there. I shot a fat doe out of it Saturday morning. I also missed a Buck that Sunday. (Remember what I said about life getting in the way? I hadn't sighted in the T/C I used that morning.)

So, yeah, its fun to laugh at those who are not set up until opening day, but it can happen to anyone. And there is always a chance, if you know where to set up.

One time we were headed up toward the Garner Park area where we were going to hunt a property, and on the hwy just out of Hondo we saw a trail of corn on the roadway.
It kept going and going and we figured someone hauling corn sprung a leak!....Duh!
Sure nuff there they were with a big flatbed trailer loaded to the gills with bags of corn and several hanging off the back of the trailer.
Probably happens now and then on the way to lease.
I've seen ice chest, lids of several sizes, trash, you name it.

Yep not always rookies, lots of reasons for taking stands. We loaded a 36' float today with two complete towers and ladders and all kinds of crap. We just bought a place next to our lease and putting stands on it this week.
