 Powder for .260 with 142 SMK?

Looking for a little guidance on what type of powder to use.
I'm having a full custom .260 Rem built on a Stiller Predator long action with a Rem Varmint contoured 1 in 8 twist 24" Bartlein barrel, should be done in the next month or so.
I have started gathering components (Lapua brass, 142 SMKs, CCI BR2s), but am at a loss for what powder to start with. This is my first time loading for the .260, I mainly load .308 right now.
All the research I've done seems to point to H4350, but it seems pretty dang hard to find. A good friend suggested H4831sc, which I do actually have on hand as well as Varget
What powders would you guys suggest as an alternative to H4350? Or should I just keep looking for it because it's THAT good....

IMR 4451 is a great replacement for H4350.

IMR 4451 is a great replacement for H4350. Just ordered some since I'm getting low on H-4350. I'll work up a load with the new to me powder as soon as I get it.

IMR 4451 is a great replacement for H4350. Just ordered some since I'm getting low on H-4350. I'll work up a load with the new to me powder as soon as I get it. It ran a touch faster burning in my 6mm creed but still gave great accuracy and single digit sd.

Great news! I spent some time researching substitutes for H-4350 in 6.5 Creedmoor. Of course Varget is listed, but with 2.5 gr less of a Max charge. I want the case as full as possible, and IMR-4451 listed a higher Max charge than H-4350 of 40.0 gr, which we all know is  Per Hodgdon: H-4350 Max charge 40.0 gr (everyone knows they shoot between 42.0 and 43.0) IMR 4451 Max charge 41.1 gr. So 41.1 gr is where I am going to start, and carefully look for pressure signs.

Must be some discrepancy in load data or could be your talking about a different caliber or bullet weight than the OP asked about.
Mine shows .260 - 142gr smk, H4350 - starting 41.5gr, max 44.5gr.
Ive had very good results with .260 using all sorts of powders.
I used different brass & primers than you intend to, which may make a little deference.
My opinion in order based on accuracy & velocity in one Rem 700 .260 rifle.

I was talking 6.5 Creedmoor. It is within the paragraph.
Point being I was looking for a substitute powder, and that is what I went through to find one.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! Hopefully Chad will see this and chime in too.
IMR 4451 sounds like a viable alternative.
JG- will you let me know how you like it in your 6.5 Creed? I figure if it works well for you, there's no reason it won't work for me in .260 since the two are very similar...
Rustler- thank you for that list, very helpful. I might start with the 4831sc that I already have since its on your list just to fireform the brass and see what the velocity is.

They have you on the right track. If H4350 was not available, the new IMR 4451 would be my next pick. It is very similar to H4350. H4831 would also work, but it's a heavily compressed load, depending on your seating depth. I knew several shooters who ran 4831 in their 260 around 46-47 grains with the longer barrels to get the speed up in competition. Another good choice would be Alliant's R16. It is their newer temp stable powder with similar burn rate as H4350. I have not played with it much, but the feedback from other shooters have been good. Also, Alliant 2000 MR is a decent pick. It is a powder that I think is a hidden jewel powder. I use it in my personal 308 Win loads with a heavy bullet. It is a more temp stable powder than varget, and is slightly slower burning. I know the engineer who created the 2000MR and 4000MR powder lines, and have spoken with him in length about these powders. The 2000MR would also be a good pick for the 260 Rem and 140 grain bullets. There are lots of options available other than H4350, that will be equally good. As a shooter, I always recommend having a back up or secondary powder to fall back on when you can not find your primary powder. In times as of right now (election year with the possibility of a Dem in office), it would be very wise to have a primary and secondary powder choice.

Another option is H414, which I tried when I could not find H4350.
Win 760 is the identical powder, just relabelled.
It is a fine spherical powder and works well with the full range of bullet weights.
Best of all, it is consistently findable. It is somewhat temperature sensitive, about 0.8 fps/degree.
Will try the new IMR powders next, when I run out.
fwiw - Been using it with 100 gr. Barnes TTSX at 3100+ fps and 100 gr. Partitions touching 3200 fps.
Both really put the zap on deer.

I'm currently using H4831SC in my 260AI and getting 2935 fps with 129SST from a 24" barrel. The load is COMPRESSED, but no pressure signs so I'm wanting to change powders.
I've been wanting to try H4350, but haven't found any yet. RL17 is also on my "try" list, but I've read a few reports of inconsistency.
I'm also searching for IMR 4451 and IMR 4955.

I know where I can get some IMR 4451, so I think that will be what I start with. I'll likely try the 4831sc too as I already have it and I should be able to seat the bullets out pretty long.

I know a .260 is not the same as a .30-06, but some have found Ramshot Hunter to be an excellent substitute for H4350 in the '06 when you can't find it. Cartridge : .260 Rem
Bullet : .264, 142, Sierra HPBT MatchK 1742
Useable Case Capaci: 45.662 grain H2O = 2.965 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 2.800 inch = 71.12 mm
Barrel Length : 24.0 inch = 609.6 mm

Help me interpret what it spits out, I've never used it before. What are you looking for when selecting a few powders to start with out of all that information?

Well...I look for manageable case fill, high velocity, and 100% (or at least close) burn percentage. I also consider things QL doesn't readily disclose such as temperature sensitivity and sometimes whether or not a powder will meter well through a measure.

And cannot be argued.  The metering doesn't factor into my consideration, since all I use is a Chargemaster. But I can understand how it can be important to many hand loaders.

I like to use a measure for high volume loading, which for me is .222, .223, and handgun rounds. I did deviate recently when I started working with AR Comp for .223, but I may go back to Benchmark one of these days.

Once I get it from Chad, I'll work up a load very soon afterwards. If we meet tomorrow, and he remembers it, I suspect I'll have some data by next week.
