I read a guys post on another forum about loading for a 18" 7mm-08.
He said with faster burning powders like Hodgdon Benchmark he was able to get a 140gr round to average 2740 fps.
I'm curious to know if anyone else has experience with this. Does the quicker burning powder work better with shorter barrels?
What powder would you use in a short barrel 7mm-08?

Chad educated me on IMR 8208, and I am thankful for it.

The powder that yields the highest velocity out of a long barrel generally will yield the highest velocity out of a short barrel.
2740 seems a bit high based on what QL is saying here, but there are variables that could make that velocity possible...and maybe even safe.
QL is not perfect, but it usually provides a pretty reliable picture. If I wanted to get the highest velocity out of the 7-08 with a 140, I'd probably go with H4895, but that's because of certain things I look for when choosing a powder. I don't think there's any doubt whatsoever that higher velocities can be achieved with powders other than Benchmark. Accuracy is much more difficult to predict than velocity, though.

I think 8208 looks pretty darned good, too. That powder has a lot going for it.

Nosler's load data shows what they've found to be the most accurate powder tested, and many say that their suggestions are often spot on. I took a moment to look, and they say Ramshot Big Game is the berries. QL likes the velocity potential, too.

I've got a couple of inches on you ... at 20". 140 grain/RL-15 combo is at 2734 FPS average a little under Red River's QL max charge.

Nice! I have some RL-17 sitting on the shelf. Maybe when I get my 7mm-08 set up I will test it.
Just need to find someone to meet at the range who owns a chronograph!
