My son Hudson got drawn for the TPWD anterless draw hunt at Muse WMA. The hunt was this past weekend. We had a blast!
After the orientation on Saturday morning, we got in the stand at 12:30pm. It was a long sit till prime time, but we wanted to take advantage of all the time we could. At about 6:30pm a group of smaller hogs came in right behind our stand at 20 feet! Hudson wasn't sure if he wanted to shoot a hog or not so we waited a few minutes. By the time he decided to go ahead and shoot one...and we got the back windows open in the blind...the hogs moved on and didn't allow a shot.
15 minutes later a doe popped out at 75 yards and gave Hudson a perfect broadside shot. She dropped in her tracks. He was glad he didn't shoot the small hogs since the doe came out. The next morning we didn't see anything in the early hours. But, at 9am we heard some pigs squealing. A few minutes later this big sow was running across the field. Hudson shot once. Since she was on the run, we assume he missed since the hog didn't flinch with a .270. He took another running shot and dropped it. When we got up to it, we realized he had actually hit it the first time as well. Those things are tough! She weighed in at 210lbs.
The TPWD staff at the WMA went above and beyond to make this hunt special for the kids. I can't say enough good things about them!
Here are a few pics from the hunt...
