took my oldest son out for youth season....kid has been pumped about it.

Hunting a new place close to my house, seen a few possible canidates for him to get but nothing to get really excited about personally.

got in the blind at 6:50, feeder goes off at 7:15. Few deer start milling in, several young bucks I've seen in a few past sits. Then I see tines walking thru the cedars.

about a 130 class 5 year old 8 point comes out and starts running everything off the feeder. we wait about 5 min to let it get a little more light. gun goes out the window, get set up, a few more min waiting for him to get broadside and clear of a few small cedars. doe runs off and buck starts to follow her out, I bark twice at her, he stops broadside at 80 yards and I hear the boom but no "thud" that signals a bullet hit. buck wheels and high tails it outta there. My heart sinks but I hold out some hope. we go look and find no blood. Its a very clear trail he went down and I follow it finding no blood or hair. I look all over the place before we finally give up the search....on the way back he admits he raised his head right before he pulled the trigger.

Poor guy I feel so bad for him, this was by far and away a better buck than I had expected him to get a shot at

It happens, how did he take it? I can't wait to let my boy shoot in a couple years, but he I know he wears his heart on his sleeve and will be upset first time he misses. I remember missing a deer for the first time and thought life was over

That's why they call it hunting. Hopefully he gets another chance. Chin up!

There's airways a lesson to be learned when hunting. There will be another chance.

I hope he gets another shot at it.

Of course, mom will be hunting as well and she won't lay off him, nor would I expect her to.

I see him while bow hunting I'm probably gonna sling an arrow at him, not gonna lie

I had my son on his first deer hunt...no chance to shoot though. I was hoping he could just get a doe since we have too many. We did at least see 7 of the, in two groups. Just way too far to try a shot. When we hung it up, we agreed it was great to be together, outside and we know there are plenty of chances left this season.

When I started hunting with my Dad back in 1969 I missed everything for about 3-4 years. Could shoot paper great, just got excited over deer. Later in life and after killing a few deer my Dad confessed he thought I didn't want to kill one, thought I was missing on purpose.
Hopefully he'll get it done next time.

Hey, at least he knew what he did at the shot. That's no small thing. He'll remember it and be a better hunter for it.

It has happened to all of us at one time or another. Tell him to keep his head up and keep hunting. With the rut about to start that buck will be back chasing those does, maybe even in the morning. up

Depends on the buck and how he reacted to the shot.

I would hunt the feeder with the most deer/doe activity. If he did not get pushed off the place by y'all looking for him then he will be back. IMO His mind is focused on one thing right now and he won't remember your shot missing him.

If your going to miss the vitals, that's the way to do it IMO... You where there with wisdom, support and able to explain "things happen, you will do better next time as you learn from mistakes." Much better conversation than loosing a clearly wounded buck.
