Interesting. I was comparing the cutaway drawings, and the ELD Match looks as though it has a much thinner jacket than the ELD-X.

Interesting...so how many of you guys have used them? Is the performance that much better than the a-max?

As far as shooting, I noticed a slight better performance. I had a customer bring out a 6.5 Creedmoor and two types of Hornady ammo, one loaded with 140 A-Max, one loaded with 140 ELD-M. We got DOPE on the A-Max, then used that for the ELD-M. If memory serves the ELD-M needs .1 Mil less elevation 500, 600, 700, and .2 less at 800 yards.

ELD-X think "expand". As far as I understand, that's the designation of the "X".

Interesting. That's the exact opposite of Berger VLD-Target, and VLD-Hunting.

Jacket thickness also goes hand in hand with jacket composition. Just something else to think about .....

Exactly what I was thinking when I saw it. So Hornady is using a very thin jacket in their match offering and Berger developed theirs with a thick jacket. It would be interesting to contrast the rationale each designer used when these were conceived.

Reckon the alloy blend of each bullet jacket is different?

I'm sure the tip impacts the decision. Bergers have a pin hole HP so it probably needs a thin jacket to ensure expansion. The ELD has a massive hollow point with a tip for explosive expansion and probably needs a thicker jacket to control it. Berger promotes their hunting bullets to penetrate 2-3 inches prior to expansion and then it fragments like a grenade inside the animal. Hornady is promoting continuous controlled expansion at all ranges with the ELDX.

^^quite plausible^^

Berger touts their heavy jacket target bullets for repeated fire, on a hot barrel. I've tested that theory, it works. wink

I don't know, I've never had any trouble out of A-Maxes on repeated fire. Can't recall repeated fire on a VLD-Hunting, though.

Okay, then...roflmao

What DOESN'T work in that scenario?? I always figured the rifle had a lot more to do with this than anything else.

Wonder when Berger will unveil a new VLD with a tip? Never had any issues with Berger although some deer I didn't hit dense (behind the shoulder) bone and the bullet didn't really do much except pass through without really expanding leaving a minimal blood trail but, when I hit dense bone the bullet has never passed through usually DRT. I haven't fired a ELDx at a deer yet so I don't have any personal kill data on the ELDx.

I'd bet you'll see factory pointed tips from berger before any other tip design.

As far as the new eld goes with 162 the earlier claimed .650 bc has worked well for me but I noticed they have since upped it to .670. The new 147 eld m is said to have a very high bc but in pics it looks almost identical to the 143 eld x so I'm skeptical.

Interested to see what the BC would be if the new Berger .284 195gr EOL had a tip...Then put it in a 7mag with a 1/8 twist 30in barrel.

Probably one of many reasons you always have to change fps or BC on ballistic apps/programs.

Why nothing replaces getting on the range and seeing what you see.

By Gawd we'll find out what the BC and MV is, since we have nearly a half mile to work with.

Yep, its nice having a range out the door of my man cave/reloading cave. Burn alot of money in and out of that door.

MV is simple if you got a good chrono. It should be consistent unless powder lot changes or your barrel wears.

I'm more interested in the new Nosler RDF line of bullets. They have been factory pointed and have a very nice price too.

Folks that decide to run fast twist 22 cal will have to drop back to 1/7 twist to get those 80gr ELD's to optimize BC I would reckon.
