No I do not shoot young spikes. It makes no sense to me and would rather shoot a doe.

No. Because I walked up in this guy last year and he was a spike. Look at him this year:

and he is the same gene pool as these two:

give em a pass for a year or two because, seeing the ones above, imagine what this guy will look like in 2 years...

Makes no sense to shoot any young deer if you're after trophy deer. If you just care about meat I suppose thats different

I have a 155" 3yr old 11 pt that was a 6" spike at 1.5. Because he was born in November.

He'll be a 180" 5 yr old when he dies. Only a fool would kill young spikes. Of course, it's not a bad thing there are a lot of fools. Success is easy.

Calling a large number of hunters here fools is akin to Clinton calling Trump supporters a basket of deplorables. Many of us are not hung up on hanging horns on the wall. And if you think success is easy try public land hunting.

Only a fool would make absolute statements. There are many reasons to kill spikes that aren't foolish.

I'd kill any spike I had a spare tag for. There are always anecdotal stories of a particular deer that was once a spike but is now a trophy. However, that particular deer's development runs contrary to the genetic probability that a spike is destined to be an inferior deer. He'll most likely be a bigger spike the next year or have small branched antlers with no brow tines. Further, the spike phenotype is highly hereditable. I thought this debate was settled. Texas A&M did extensive genetic research on pen raised deer at the Kerr wildlife management area. I believe the article is posted in TPWD archives online. It's a good read for those wanting a genetic understanding of the spike phenomenon.

I guess killing spikes might be a decent idea if you've already reduced herd numbers to carrying capacity and achieved an acceptable buck:doe ratio and you've got a decent age structure in your herd and you now have the luxury of culling inferior bucks. Otherwise, I don't think it makes much sense. If you're strictly meat hunting, then it doesn't matter.

If the spikes are at least 5-6 inches, yes.

Some folks like to kill 200" deer early so that they don't get old and tough!

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

Yes. I hunt in central Wood County. I have sat on a bow stand 8 times this year. I have saw 1 Doe with a yearling. Besides these I have one other Doe and a 1.5 yo 8 PT on camera. There are just not that many deer in this area. I killed a young spike last year with my bow. With a gun, I might have let him walk. The year before that, I never saw a legal deer from stand, so freezer was empty. Around here, if you start passing legal deer up, better get ready to eat tag soup.

No, not unless its a magnum real deal old junk buck. Not a dead in the back of a pickup bed fraudulent thats an old spike debate. Know your body structure to age a buck not antler.

No. There aren't. The only valid reason to shoot a "young" spike is because you want the meat (IF antler size isn't a priority).

The OP implied that antler size was important, therefore there is no valid reason to shoot a young spike. Young spikes are ones that are born in sept-dec. which is the vast majority of spikes in non drought years with good nutrition.

Some of you folks need to grow a little skin. And learn to recognize tongue in cheek comments.

The Kerr study doesn't take into account the majority of spikes. It was in pens, therefore it's comparing apples and aardvarks and it is foolish to hang the "inferior" tag on deer that were born so late in the year that they don't grow antler their first year.

I guess every situation is different, but I never shoot spikes old or young. I guess if I were hunting MLD or more than 1 buck county it might be different. I want to spend my tag on a mature buck and really don't think killing one spike is gonna change our herd or food consumption.

This argument inevitably always seems the same. I dont really disagree with either side. I understand the Kerr study wouldnt actually be duplicated in the wild. I also believe that it makes sense to perform the study like they did to get rid of outside variables.
That being said I didnt realize it was even remotely possible for a deer to be born in November or December. I understand when your buck-doe ration is out of whack you end up with some doe being bread late, but I have never heard of a does being bread in March or April.
