Wanting to start getting some use out of my first deer rifle. Made in '79, a Remington 700, BDL in .243. Only modification was trigger adjustment 37 years ago when I got it. The trigger is the best thing about this gun, always shooting great after that adjustment. It had a Leupold fixed 6x and I hunted it hard for 20 years.
I'm wanting to keep the original stock in my safe forever, but set the gun up in a different stock for family to borrow and for myself to take out after deer season for hogs and whatever else. I believe the barrel contour is sporter, not heavy at all and not floated in the stock. I'd appreciate stock recommendations. As mentioned this gun always shot very tight, so if anyone has done this and had success with it, let me know what stock you selected and if you had it bedded.

What's your stock budget? Do you want another wood, or a composite?
Good thing is there is a plethora of stocks available for a Rem 700. You can order one today and the brown truck will deliver it in a few days.

Composite. I've never bought a stock, but do have an HS Precision with full aluminum bedding block on another 700. I'd spend up to $400.00 and wouldn't expect to find something for less than $250.00. If I could get the full aluminum bedding block for this barrel contour that'd be great. Part of the mystery on this is the fact that the barrel doesn't seem to float, so I'm thinking there may be some point of contact after the recoil lug that would need to be duplicated on the replacement stock.

https://www.hogueinc.com/stocks/remington/700/shortaction/bdl/standardI'm using this and really like the rubberized coating, also has the full aluminum bedding block. You can float the barrel yourself, Fireman JG can tell you the best/easiest way. P_102

I use a Bell and Carlson medalist on my 68 model 700. I like it. Fits well and has full aluminum bedding block.

Did you have to open up the barrel channel at all, or drop in? I use a Bell and Carlson medalist on my 68 model 700. I like it. Fits well and has full aluminum bedding block.

How did it fit? Sounds as if some opening up of the barrel channel was required to obtain float.

It was a drop in, the barrel is free floating in the stock.

B&C or HS Precision would be great.

That's all good, prices are way less than I expected. I've got the HS Precision on my 5R, I think the B&C will be perfect. Looking forward to reconnecting with this great gun and preserving the original stock. I've handed this gun to inexperienced shooters and watched them shoot very tight groups with cheap ammo.

If you wanted to maintain the original look, you could buy another BDL stock off Ebay for less than $100 and have it floated and bedded

It fit very well, I just wanted to open it up a bit more. To do so, loosen the action screws enough to fit some emory cloth under the barrel (a strip of cotton as a backing helps to not scar the barrel) and hold in a vice or with your feet on a bipod. Tighten the screws till you can just move the emory cloth. Now see-saw the emory cloth up and down the underside of the barrel, tightening the screws as needed...this will open up the channel and still follow the countour of the barrel. Remove emory cloth and tighten screws.

Ive got a couple of Bell & Carlsons on Remingtons and have been very happy with them. I had a HS Precision and liked it as well, but the B&C fit me a tad better and have provided the same service for about $150 less.
