Just curious how many of y'all that don't have target turrets on your scope sight in your rifles high at 100 yards? I sight mine in at 3 inches high at 100

3 inches seems like a lot but I used to do 1 inch high. I just zero them all at 100 now and adjust if I need to.

When I aim in the shoulder I end up with a high shoulder shot and drop them

Most of my shots on deer with our blind setups will be anywhere from 85-110 yards.

I know I'm a bad person because of it, but I take neck/head shots on occasion grin , especially on hogs. I sight my gun in on the bulls eye at 100 yards so I don't have to do any guessing.
If I'm going to be shooting far enough that I need to worry about drop I will just aim a little high. One of my guns has turrets so its always zeroed at 100.

My 300yd zero puts me around 3" at 100, little higher at 200 (remember that part of it).

Depends on the shooting situation. In mine it leaves guess work.

Sight in at 100, if you know your rifle and bullet ballistics good to go. Don't need turrents if sighted in properly except for long distances.

I trust my ummmm "feel" more than I do turrets and clicks.
Dead on at 100 ish. Sometimes 50 depending on where I get to zero.
That being said, most of my rifle shots are within bow range here in east Texas.

It ain't easy being me.

+1

I like to sight mine dead on at 200 yds. If I don't have access to a 200 yd range and have to use a 100 yd range I site in 2" high at 100 yds. That will get me to 275 yds or so with no hold over if using a flat shooting caliber.

How you figure? I shoot a deer in the shoulder at 100 yards it ends up being a high shoulder shot and drops it in its tracks. If there is a situation I do have to shoot out to 250-300 yards I don't have to guess how high to aim I just aim dead on.

Depending on bbl length & .308 ammo, 3" high @ 100 could be as bad as up to 9" low @ 300yds. And that's if you can make -0- MOA shots. A 12" gap isn't "guesswork"? Your gun & your choice. I prefer to know where my bullet is going to hit, not where I think it's going to hit.

Now if you've shot @ 100, 150,200, 250, 300yds & know where it'll hit, that's different. up

I have shot it at 300 so I do know where it's going to hit

Used to do 1" high at 100 yards. Since I have learned a little bit more about ballistics and longer range shooting, I site dead on at 100.

To each his own. You can't teach an old dog new tricks. He asked a question and can't take or UNDERSTANDS the answers. BS
Do what you want.

Basically, you are using a 3" maximum point blank range (MPBR) setting. We just had a lengthy discussion on the pros and cons of MPBR. It's a good choice if you are going somewhere where you have no idea what length shots you'll be taking. Although better still, IMO, is to zero at 100 and tape a drop table on the side of your stock for longer distances.

What do you mean by that? I asked a question out of curiosity. I know where my gun hits at these distances so what you just said is completely irrelevant. If I have shot the distance and know where my gun hits what is there to understand
.

I have one question. If most animals are shot at 100 yards or less, why would you sight your rifle in at another distance, other 100 yards?

I know of and even shoot with guys that "sight their rifle in x.x iches high at 100 yards". Once they shoot their rifle, their rifle is NEVER x.x inches high. It's often times much higher than their planned x.x high, and can not hit crap beyond 150-200 yards. Why? They "think" the bullet is somewhere where it really isn't. Most of the shooters I know that use the x.x high at 100, do not fully understand precise bullet drop. They "plan" for a x.x high so they are on at 200, 250 or 300 yards. But they do not have a known zero or know the exact speed of the bullet they are shooting so the rifle is off further out. So what's the point? If you never have a precise zero, how can you be precise in your shooting. EVERYTHING stems from a properly zero'd rifle. If you want a 200 yard zero, then go shoot your rifle at 200 yards, and get it dialed in precisely at 200 yards. Not "close" or "about". And the data on your factory box of ammo is generally off, sometimes WAY off. I can't tell you how many shooters I know that I take to shoot at 200, 300+ yards, and it's an eye opener on what their true drop is, to what they "thought" it was. Know your rifle, know you ammo, and zero your freakin rifle!!!!
