I'm trying to help a good friend with his purchase of a heater for his deer blind. It seems the Little Buddy heaters are very popular with hunters, however I don't know anyone who owns one. I'm thinking the $79.99 model that you can find at Academy and Walmart is a good fit for him, but I don't how loud it is when working. I say this because I use a small, Coleman SportCat catalytic heater that makes practically zero noise. And I have seen some portable heaters that sound like a blow torch when operating.

Are the Little Buddy heaters quiet enough to use in a deer blind with thin, nylon walls?

Thanks for your feedback.

little buddys are perfectly adequate for hunting in a blind, would even hunt outside with one, they just don't make enough noise to worry about once lit. They do have a nice audible click to get started, but that's it.

I can't speak to the larger ones though, never used the mr buddy or larger

Very little noise after you light it. I have the adapter on mine so I can run a large bottle. Put the bottle under my blind and run a hose up to the heater. Eliminates carrying the little bottles. They'll last about 3 hours I think but I'm in my blind longer than that.

They're great, no noise and most of all, very little smell. Outside of the blind, they will blow out quickly. Get the bigger one if you can.

I have the larger one that can connect to a 20# bottle, as mentioned, just the few "clicks" of the starter to get it going, maybe a little "flutter" when the bottle is getting low as well... The glow put off, is a bigger pain than any sound it makes IMO.

I always keep a lighter in my blind to light my little buddy heater. Clicking the button to light it is pretty loud.

I've always wondered what it looks like in the dark when those heaters are lit up. I have to think in the pitch black the blind looks like a jack o lantern with an orange glow coming from it but maybe I'm just overthinking it. OP, they are plenty quiet except for the click starting them up.

The thing I like about the Little Buddy is once you get the blind warm you can turn it down to pilot light only for a while.

Don't turn it on until sun comes up. It will give the jack o lantern effect.

Just an hour of cold, the 3 of heat

I have the Coleman catalytics in most blinds, but have the Little Buddy in my large blind. When running there's a hiss, but it isn't loud. But, with the windows open and strong gusts blowing through the blind, it gets a bit noisier. Bugs me, but the critters don't seem to notice.

Why'd Coleman quit making those catalytic heaters? They were perfect.

The Little Buddy Heater works great in my 4x8 Blynd (Texas company) and after it's running for 15 minutes, I am wearing a t shirt and starting to sweat. I have sliding tinted windows in my blind and we only open the windows about 5 inches when hunting hogs and predators at night so I don't think they see a glow from outside the blind. It's pretty darn quiet too. First night using it, we had a huge hog scratching itself on the side of the tower and a buck walk out 5 feet from us that didn't get spooked. I might buy a second one just to have Incase the one I have ends up breaking on me. The first one I had ended up having the ignition break and it was the one time that I didn't have a lighter in my backpack. That was a damn cold night lol. They make a larger unit that can run on a rechargeable battery that I am going to get once I buy some land and build a small cabin on the property for hunting. The extra batteries for it are not that expensive too.

The windows are pretty well tinted so I don't think they see any light from the heater.

^^^This is good advice. I have used the same one for the last four years and there is nothing more unsettling than the "PING" the spark ignition makes at 5 in the morning in the pitch black.

Mine must be the same and I bought it in 2012, I can light it (inside the blind) with deer 15' below with no issue, the acorns hitting the roof make more noise.

Amen, I hate that dang sound and it seems like it always take 3 pings to start. Get the next size up Little Buddy and it uses a AA powered igniter. It has a space to hold a second propane bottle and can be hooked up to an external propane tank.

I agree. I have only one and I wish I had more.

I got the Mr. Heater (square, 1 tank) version for xmas and took it out last night to hunt. The starting ping is annoying, particularly when you have to to it 2 or 3 times to start the thing. However, what I found really annoying was the amount of light it put out. That sucker is BRIGHT. I see from the above pic that the itty bitty versions work the same way. That isn't beneficial at all for night hunting. The Colemans put out very little light.

I have three portable Buddy heaters that I use all the time. One I found in a dump pile of trash. Took it home and blew it out with an air hose and it worked fine. I have purchased hoses and run them to a big bottle. The little green bottles are too expensive. This Christmas I got the Big Buddy which also has a fan on it to blow the hot air. I really like the Buddy brand of heaters.

I don't think the colemans Are as good because of the gas smell the put out. Buddy doesn't do that.

Yeah mine really doesn't make any noise when I push the ignition button. Maybe the newer ones are quieter.

the best part is they have a great tip over prevention feature and shutoff if bumped. They also have a low oxygen sensor (but no CO sensor). Spoils one when hunting in the cold and makes it comfortable.
