Had a big 8 come in tonight in a doe. She came in to 20 yards and he took the long way stopped him at 40 put the pin on him and let her fly. Found some hair and a drop of blood just grazed his back. Hope he will be back what y'all think?

I think 40 yards is a long way to shoot at an alert buck.

I think 40 yards is a long way to shoot at an alert buck. Agree, made that mistake once, never again. In that case I never touched a hair on him

I think 40 yards is a long way to shoot at an alert buck. Agreed. To far to shoot at a Texas whitetail.

I'm not speaking for everyone else, just my own experience over the years I've bowhunted, but 40 yards is a long shot even for an Olympic archer. My personal limit I put on myself is 20 yards which I feel comfortable at, and I've even missed at that distance before, so nothing is a slam dunk. Deer are faster than any arrow out there, so everything needs to work in your favor which it rarely does. Most of my blind setups are made to have my limited distance in mind, and still no matter how much I plan the deer always has the advantage. There is a saying that a true bowhunter is just that, and isn't just someone out in the woods with a bow.

Especially when you stop them with a grunt or whistle. They go on alert because it was a noise they didn't expect.

30 yards is my limit on a whitetail. I can put arrows in a 3" group all day at 40 and 50 yards practicing, but that target doesnt duck and spin once the arrow is released.

I practice out to 60 40 in my opinion is about the max I'll shoot at a deer. I'm very confedent at that range.

You can be confident in your shooting at 40 but the deer wont usually still be there when the arrow arrives. Probably going to wound more deer than you recover at that range.

Targets don't move or bleed. I see the button heads on TV take long shots, hit them in the guts when they duck out then fist pump and say they smoked them. They are fortunate to find some of them.

Hope he will be back what y'all think? It happens especially if you aren't used to sitting in a chair. I had a doe duck me at 20 yards. I sat for 20 minutes in a daze... Amazed, confused and in disbelief, then I looked down and saw both my cables some how where in the same slot on my cable gaurd. Variables suck, especially when they don't work in your favor. He will be back, look forward to the pics of the venison steaks!!!

<30 yards - I messed up a shot a few weeks ago at 27 yards. Sickened by it still, as the buck probably still has an arrow in its backstrap and running around... I hope he's still running around.
