I'll never forget the day before the season opener many years ago when I went out to load the ATV and found the battery as dead as a doorknob. Thankfully, there was plenty of time to replace it and still leave Houston before the totally horrible getaway traffic that occurs every Friday before the season opener. No question, this is the time when you start trying to remember anything you may have overlooked that must be done before leaving out.

What tips would you share that might help some poor soul from panicking at the last minute?

Hunting season has been open dang near a month.

We do our prep in September

That said, I make sure my pack is packed, tool box is in the Polaris along with all the neccesarily equipment, and we are running good.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I forgot my crossbow cocking rope once. 160# draw is a beach to pull back. Now I own 2. One is tied to the crossbow and the other is hanging in my deerstand. rofl

Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

I had some issues with the battery on the ranch truck when out there a month ago, hopefully I'm not in the same boat you were (or worse - could be alternator). Either way I added this to the list for the opener, hopefully it works out

I have to believe there will be hunters who show up at their camp next week and realize someone forgot to do something before being the last to leave and lockup.

I know of a place right now where the water has been turned off because someone thought someone else had been paying the bill.

I've forgotten my knife before. I do carry a pocket knife all the time, and have had to use it to gut a deer before in a pinch. Not fun, but it works.

I've also forgotten the keys to the travel trailer before. Had to figure out a way to break in to get the keys to the mule.

Terrible traffic leaving Houston occurs every weekend of the general season. Both Friday and Sunday. I've never understood all the guys hauling their ATV's, feeders and stands back and forth all season long. Not just right before the opener. Fortunately, our rifle season is 5 months long, but the best hunting is still primarily within the general season dates. That's why I won't leave town on Friday and come home on Sunday, unless I absolutely have to.

I remember when I was very young, my dad, grandad, brother and I left for the lease early one morning. It was a 5 hour drive, got about 3 hours down the road, grandad said crap I forgot my guns! Had to drive all the way back, lol. So thanks to my grandad for another valuable lesson, guns first thing on my checklist.

In the bow stand Saturday morning and the feeder did not go off but the ground was torn up so I knew the clock was off. Opened up my back back and no key to the varmint guard, just a 1 mile round trip walk and had the key from the truck. Seems like I always forget something.

There's a lock on your varmint guard? And they say I'm obsessed with locks.

I used to leave my knife on my desk at work all the time (ended the day stripping thermocouple wires so I didn't have to the next morning.) A gas station that was open half the time about a mile from the lease had the little $1 keychain knives and I still have about 20 of them.

I've forgotten keys to the trailer and wheelers before... That's why keys are now hidden for both! Problem solved!

And I can promise you at least one person has read your post and remembered they still need to buy a new license. How else can you explain such long lines the night before Opening Day.

I realized two weeks ago as I was driving to our lease that I did not have my license - pulled over and bought it online in five minutes - you don't even need the actual license on you - if you get checked GW can look your Driv Lic up and it shows your tag

How do you tag a turkey or deer or fill out the harvest log on the back of your license without an actual license on you.
Does TPWD send tags through the mail for online license purchases?

So how do you tag a deer that you take the same morning you buy your license online?

Bring the correct ammo. I was heading to my lease one weekend and a friend of mine invited me to do a early morning hunt on his place before I got to my lease. He took me out, I got set up and comfortable. Put ammo in my trusty Savage, what the heck? Ammo would not chamber. You can't put a .270 round into a 7mm08 chamber. I was so embarrassed I did not tell my friend what I had done. I spent the whole morning praying that a bruiser would not show up.
