Plenty with the right load?
I know its about shot placement, but will a 125 grain be plenty for deer hunting out of a 308?
thanks

Yes, without a doubt.
A 130 grain is the standard for 270 Win and it has killed millions.
But shot placement is paramount.

Deer all over are killed every year with 223's 22-250's shooting 50-60 grain bullets and 243's and 25-06's and the like shooting appx. 100 grain bullets, it will do the job.
I only recommend you be mindful of the construction of the bullet and where you shoot it. Light fast bullets tend to not do well on heavy bone, I would try to keep it off the shoulder as much as possible.

I have sierra pro hunter rounds. My intentions were a little less recoil, I always keep my boys in mind if possible, and a more flatter trajectory. I am new to reloading and just wanted to make sure and get a bullet that would not be thin-walled and break into a bunch of pieces because of the faster velocity.

I have found lighter weight prohunters to do a good job, I think you will be pleased.
Have been shooting a 110 grain prohunter out of my 270 win at approximately 2600-2700 fps for a few years on deer and hogs and it does great. I loaded it for my wife an recoil is minimal.

My youngest son has been shooting the 125tnt at 2900fps for reduced recoil. I have been pleasantly surprised at how that bullet works on game.

Don't take offense to this ..... but if your boys are recoil sensitive a "flatter trajectory" shouldn't even come into play because they should not be taking long range shots in the first place. The Sierra Pro Hunters you mentioned are plenty to kill any whitetail walking. But a gut-shot deer with a 50BMG is still a gut-shot deer. If recoil is going to adversely effect their accuracy, look for another caliber ... not another bullet.

My 15yo complained about the recoil of his .308 over his .243 so i loaded him the 125gr bullets. He is the most deadly person i have ever seen shooting game. He simply doesnt miss at any distance!

its not that we are sensitive...they dont even shoot the 308 right now...but when reloading rounds, I "keep them in mind" always. Its just something I do.
I own a 22-250 and a 243 that they use. Along with 223 and 22lr, but for hunting, the 243...and possibly in the future, the 308.
Just thinking ahead.

Way back in the 80's I had 1 rifle, Rem 700 in 30-06. Gunsmith in Llano told me to try 125 grain bullets instead of my 165 on the small deer in the Hill Country. They worked great and for years that is what I shot!

I was at Midway Guns just outside of Llano the other day. We were talking about 125gr bullets and a light load of IMR 4895 in 30-06. The fella I was talking to about that is a gunsmith, he said he lives in Tow. He makes custom 1911 pistols.

Yes. I used a box of 125 Core Lokts way before they were labeled "managed recoil" and they did fine in .308. Deer, elk, black bear.
