So I have a 300WSM, a 30-06 and a 270. But I'm looking for something for my young son that will have reduced recoil over the 3 I already have. It needs to have good over the counter ammo selection, it needs to versatile enough to go from varmints up to as large as possible, I want it to be fast and flat, and I'd like it to a round known for accuracy.

Things I have thought about are 25-06, 6.5 creedmor, 257 wthby. What are your thoughts?

I've read good things about the.243. I have been on the lookout for the right deal on one myself.

all the above will be fine. I lean more towards 6.5CM and .243. I sometimes shoot a .243 which is misunderstood by most as only a youth gun. I've killed deer and pigs past 500 yards with it, its good for young hunters but is a more than capable at taking deer out to 600 yards.

7mm-08 is my official do-all, high performance, economical, versatile, bad to the bone, short action cartridge.

6.5 Creedmoor, 260 Rem, 243, and .308 would not be bad choices either.

In order of recoil ....

243 Winchester
6.5 Creedmoor
7mm-08 Remington

If you reload, any can be easily loaded with safe reduced loads.

You know exactly what the OP is talking about when he requested a "flat" shooting cartridge!

243 or 7-08, a 25-06 would be fine if he is a bigger boy

I have a .243 that my nephews and nieces use for deer hunting. It is a wonderful caliber, low recoil and very accurate. I just purchased it a couple of years ago and now I wonder how I ever made it without it. It's a great caliber for Texas deer and hogs.

Actually I don't. I watch bullets go down range 48 weeks a year, every one of them fall. Please educate me.

I've got a Win. Mod. 70 Pre-64 in .243, Leupold on top. The thing's incredible. Whenever the kids, now grown, are shooting/hunting, this is what I put in their hands.

You KNOW He is talking about Max point blank range. Does every cartridge have the same MPBR?

No.

This is easily fixed though, even with a duplex. Zero at the top heavy post, test where it hits halfway to center, center, halfway from center to the bottom post, and on the bottom post. This is all due to gravity, which is constant and unforgiving.

Five points of aim. 22 to 30, it'll work, it just will have different ranges based on caliber. And I bet he's never thinking of a 300 yard shot, probably 200 at most, therefore a center 100 yard zero will be fine, and learn where the 200 yard hold is. It's not much of a difference from 6mm to 30.

"Young son" = 243. Will kill deer, pigs, and even elk with plenty of over the counter ammo. Of the three you list, 6.5 CM or 260 both have plenty of choices online, but no where near the selection over the counter of 243 (and I love the 260).

25-06 and 257 Wby are too much for a young boy. Shot placement trumps power. A well placed 243 will kill DRT to 300 yards from experience. Teach him how to shoot and better to use a scope.

70 gr SMK's make a pleasant practice load for 243, or buy him a Ruger American Compact in 223 with a few cases of ammo and let him try to wear it out. Keep it fun and he will have fun.

I don't agree with everything FJG posts, but 98% is good enough. up

Worth a listen for sure.

Kids and women are quite capable of understanding how to run a quality scope and rifle with very good results. Might be a lesson in there somewhere.

7mm08 has been a stellar performer for over 35 years for me and still is. Plenty of ammo choices available these days as well.

One I am enjoying a lot these days is he 6.5 Grendel which recoils less than the 243 yet is plenty for varmints, deer and hogs to 400 yards or more with factory ammo becoming more plentiful. Would it ne my first choice for elk, no but if that is all I had the hunt would still take place. Howa is now making selling their mini action in the Grendel.

Preciate ya Jeff.

Youngest I've taught on a centerfire is 12. He learned Mils, and ran a .308 with a full load of 178 A-Maxes out to 800 yards, repeatedly. Was a THF member's son.
