When I hunted there, it seemed to always fall on Thanksgiving weekend. Here in Alabama, rut starts in late December, early January. That's why the state extended the season to Feb 10th.

Seen 2 bucks in rains county chasing does over the weekend. 1 of which was very good. I would say things are starting to heat up for sure.

Archer Co. Saw two really nice mature bucks this weekend. Very content just eating corn and hanging out. Not in a hurry at all. Three bucks at the feeder at the same time, although only one in the pen. The dominant one. I hope they hold off til opening weekend. I've got two nice shooters coming in every day.

They're chasing in Hays/Travis Counties too. Have been for over a week now.

Sure glad I'm hunting south and a mid-December rut.

Bucks might be ready, but highly doubt that does are already playing the game.

Exactly. Well, in most areas of the state. On the mid to upper coast the rut is mostly over.

But, what I'm seeing is sparring matches over food. And scraping activity and young bucks chasing does as happens in pre-rut. My mature bucks are more interested in eating now than anything else. Which makes October the best month to kill a trophy buck.

Does are in really good shape in Mills County. I saw lots of fresh dead deer between Sweetwater and Goldthwaite this weekend on the highways and saw a couple of chases too. I suspect we're going to have an early rut that is going to trickle rather than boom. I wouldn't miss the rifle-opener, it's likely to be near peak.

Our bachelor groups (most of them) broke up a week and a half ago. We have another week or so of the dominant bucks establishing territories and then seeking the girls out will follow. I rattled in a couple of young deer the other day and a mature buck was in the field and could have cared less.

New moon hits this weekend. Could make for some eventful sits.

I hunt Taylor county also and our bucks are still running together, but are establishing pecking order. Nice 10 and an old 9 showed up this weekend that we haven't seen on camera since last season. Opening weekend should be pretty good, but the hard chasing will start the following week.

it is starting in Upshur county. I have pictures on my cam of 2 small bucks fighting it out for about 6 minutes. I also saw a smaller 6 point head down after a doe as I was pulling up to my lease. they were in a guys front yard around 1:30 yesterday

Had a solo buck in Brown Co. that should have been my best bow buck to date walk underneath the tripod I was sitting in last night. My tripod is jammed up in an oak inside the dripline of the tree. That dude came in at 6:30 and stood at/near the base of the ladder until 7:08. He was just holding short watching the feeder waiting for the ladies, I assume. It was fun to watch his tail flick and I swear we could hear each other breathe. Have no idea where the girls were, but he and I were both sorely disappointed.
