Starting too look at some property in hays county...

Anyone have the good and bad I should be aware of?

I read somewhere something about the county did or was trying to make it illegal to shoot on your own property... did that ever happen???

Deer population??

Thanks!

The acreage limit for discharging firearms did not pass. It came about some years ago after a drunk illegal was target shooting a .22LR into a piece of plywood. Of course the rounds passed through. One round struck and killed a 10 year old girl that was jumping on a trampoline in her backyard 2 doors down. These lots were 5 and 10 acres and long/skinny in form.

The county has a high deer and hog population. 120 to 130 class bucks are common. I know of one 16 point that grossed the 180s. It was a low fence deer. The central part of the county (Driftwood, Dripping Springs and Wimberley are all chock full of deer. Onion Creek drainage and some remote areas along the Blanco River have good populations of turkey.

Tell me more about where you're looking specifically and I'll most likely have info about it.

There is a dramatic difference in land cost, vegetation, and wildlife at the freeway. I35 cuts through the county North to South and to the West is more hill country with more deer and other wildlife. To the East is more forest and grass land, not as nice or as expensive. I hunt near Driftwood on a small property and it is covered with deer.

Thanks guys.

Looking in and around dripping springs. Probably 30/50ish acres... Looking to move there so not strictly based on hunting but I told myself next place I move I'll be able to at least have a feeder off my back porch etc... And test our rifles out the shop door etc...

Sounds like that won't be a problem....?

Go well west of Drippin', out toward Henly or beyond. Everything east is growing up into Yuppieville. All half million dollar homes that look alike on 1/8 of an acre lot.

At Henly you can go south on FM 165 toward Blanco or continue west on US 290 toward Johnson City. Lots of places out those directions like you describe. Also look off of Creek Road and Mt. Gainor Rd. and out toward Pedernales State Park. Good luck.

PS...there's some nice places like that west of Wimberley too.

Look out near Fischer, down hwy 32. Wife and I bought a small place near Canyon lake a few years ago. The property has tripled in value in the past 5 years. Better hurry, that area is selling like hotcakes

Henly use to be nothing, now everyone one lives down that road. Land is pretty expensive out there.

Downside to hunting in the area is pretty much any buck is legal west of I-35. Its hard to find good mature buck. The average bucks I see on camera are 2 year olds. A few 3 and 4 year old ones but I've never seen them in real life.

KLP,
Get out late at night. There's lots of mature bucks around. Especially downtown Wimberley, but they're mostly nocturnal.
