Well I finally got around to taking Jason's class and got there at 9:00 a.m. He's there and ready to go with everything set up. We start talking and he's asking questions to get a feel for what I know and what my goals are. First thing I told him was I didn't want to contaminate my mind with moa and just feed me mil information. He laughed and smiled. Then I told him we had one problem one of my two pst 4-16 wouldn't hold zero so I had to put a 10 power fixed that had mil reticle and moa turrets. He said no problem we will just hold on the reticle for elevation and windage.
First thing we did was go through the basics of shooting then got to the good stuff, shooting. First gun 7 mag Savage 110 pencil barrel, timney trigger 4-16 vortex 162 ELD. It did well but we had to let the barrel cool down before we made it out to 800 yards.
2nd gun 308 savage axis pencil barrel, timney trigger, Bushnell elite 10-40 fixed power with a Burris P.E.P.R. mount. Yes this was pulled off one of my AR.S so the scope set high, not ideal but it would work till I get my pst fixed. This was totally different just holding on the reticle for elevation and windage but it was a good learning experience. We only went out to 700 yards because the hold for 700 was 4.8 mils and a 5 mil hold was at the top of the post on the reticle.
I also brought my 6.5 Grendel in the AR platform that I had shot at the hunters challenge and had done terrible with. I hadn't figured out at the time that the pst 4-16 had gone bad (that's my excuse). Jason asked if I wanted to shoot it, and I asked if we still had time and His reply was "It's not dark yet." I'm glad He said that cause I really wanted to shoot the Grendel, plus it is so much easier on the shoulder.
So we pulled the scope off the 308 and put it on the Grendel got it zeroed at 100 yards put the turrets on zero and decided to dial out this time instead of hold and to my surprise it tracked perfect. Made it out to 800 and hit the big plate and Jason said move over to the small plate. I said, you know this is a 10 power scope and the cross hairs cover up most of the plate and He said go ahead it'll do it.
Well it did but it was a bit of a challenge. Jason said hold .3 mils right, well it took me a little bit to get set, then he said now hold .2 mils left. The wind was switching back and forth. One shot miss and hit the berm and the dust off the hit blew left and next time you could see the dust blow to the right. I had more fun shooting the 800 yard small plate because it was more of a challenge.
I had a great time and if you've been thinking of going out and shooting with Jason you won't regret it and will learn a whole lot. Thanks for taking the time to read this. David

Yes I remember you, the guy that brings a gun he has never shot and and is not sited in and ends up doing real well and beating the spinning target.

I knew I sent that last one on the spinner too soon and my heart sunk but Chad called it sure enough it is spinning. That shot cost me some money lol. Some of the most fun I have ever had. Edit: Chad and JG really made that day happen. Ask Big Fitz how much I was shaking when the rain started letting up lol.

I also remember I can't hold the reticle still while standing off-hand Good times! Yeah I remember that the 2 young men shot after we did and I noticed 2 things. First the standing off hand shot Chad said to the boys "don't hold your breath because your eyesight is the first thing to be affected." I would have liked to known that before I shot. Second when we got a hit Chad would say "impact" and when one of the boys got a hit it was "IMMMPACTTTT!!!!! ATTA-BABYYY". just saying.

I'm just kinda poking my friend JG. Vortex are bad except their Binos, they are terrible. the eyepiece fell of a brand new pair of Talon Binos $599.....I sent them back to vortex, they glued it back on, jeezus, they suk. I will never own another Vortex Optic, ever. Vortex doesn't care cuz everyone on the THF thinks they are the bee's knee's . its a cult thing, cheap tacticool scopes....in my opinion only. I'm sure Vortex are riding on all the champion sniper/long-range competitors rifles. screw me once........that's the only chance you get

Good review of the lesson. I've been wanting to book a day for over a year, but logistics and timing just don't allow it.
I would also like to consolidate all of my optics to Mil/Mil. It just makes more sense in my head.

I have 2 Vortex Viper PST FFP scopes.
They work great and I really like them. However, when I took Fireman's shooting class I looked through his SWFA SS 5-20x50 and that glass made the Vortex look sub par to say the least.
Other than that Vortex hasn't let me down.
