Going second season rifle 10/22/ - 30/16. Looking at Canyon Creek or Crazy woman creek or Bear Creek.

Any suggestions where to look for elk? Thanks in advance.

years ago, we hunted in 751 to the SE of Vallecito Reservoir up on Grassy Mountain. There was a new subdivision SE of Columbus that was private but used the public roads to drive up high to access the SE side of Grassy Mountain, saw lots of elk around the watering holes/dirt tanks about mid way up.

also hunted to the SE of Bayfield in the Salt Creek area bordered on the south by the Ute Indian Reservation when the snow/temps had pushed the herds farther south. Can take the national forest road all the way up to the very top where the radio towers are located and then slip off the north side to hunt. Decent elk and some pretty good mulies there but can get overly crowded with local hunters.

also due east of Bayfield, there is an access point that is more rolling terrain with good grasses and meadows that will have smaller herds if there's snow up high.

I know you didn't draw in 74 but there are some really good elk country just SW from Silverton.

Interested in how you do.
I did OTC in 74 last year just north of Purgatory and didn't see anything.

I am looking now at 75 now in the same area you are.

Crazy Woman Creek? Is it just me, or is this redundant. I mean, couldn't they have just called "Woman Creek"? Isn't the "Crazy" part automatically implied?

Good luck. Shoot a big 'un.

Def interested in how y'all both do.
I'll be headed that way 11/5 for 3rd season.

Still scouting via GoogleEarth right now.

I am missing the DIY hunt right now that I went on last year. Contemplating going up for 3rd season, what unit are you looking at?

I think the 3 of us are looking at unit 75. One of the 3 of us is already up there I think for 2nd rifle. I'm going 3rd rifle.

Those are some steep draws you want to hunt. Also all the camping spots by them are full.

They look similar to the ones I hunted in 74 last year during 3rd season.

It was hot and dry and we fought a waning full moon. They moved at night Did not kill anything. Only saw 2 herds in the dark timber and they heard me coming from a mile away. No one on the mountain had seen anything. We talked to some guides who had been up high for 11 days and they did not see anything. All they saw was tracks going down hill. We went towards Pegosa and scouted around but no one had seen anything there either. Happy to talk on the phone. Too much info to put down.

Good luck to all.
