All the stores in this area of Houston no longer keep their corn outside the store. In fact, one local HEB keeps it within the garden department where the gates are locked every night at 8pm. It was a year ago when an Academy employee explained to me how they were forced to make that move after people kept paying for a few bags and then later loaded their truck down with it when no one was watching.

I feel safe saying that many of these corn thieves are not your common low-life's, but slob hunters who make good money and just want to steal when no one is looking.

Yea, have thought the same thing, you buy 5 bags of corn, and no one walks out to load it. So how many times have people loaded a few extra? My conscious would eat me up, and bad charma is not what I need when hunting!

Yup.

I usually buy a pallet of corn or protein at a time. A few seasons back, I got a pallet that the wrap had been taken off of and the top layer of bags were slighlty skewed. It was right before their closing time at noon on Saturday. I didn't think much about it. Got to the ranch and started unloading it and counting bags and there were five 'bonus bags.' I went back to the feed store the next weekend (they were closed by the time I got unloaded that day) and the feed store refused to accept payment for the bonus bags. They earned a loyal customer that day. Hopefully they have made up the cost of those five bags by now with everything I buy from them.

Sometimes being a good guy pays off. Being a thief would eat me up.

Had a similar experience with a pallet of sod at home depot. I wanted 100 pieces of sod, they didn't feel like counting them out. Ended up with 167 pieces, they said don't worry about it. As for the corn, it really irritates me when I pay for something, walk over to show the receipt to the person next to the door before I load my corn. Then I get watched like I'm robbing the place. I went out of my way to let you know I bought X number of bags of corn and you think I'm trying to rob you blind.

I used to load all the corn myself since I'm able bodied, now that they waste their time watching me at Academy I make them load it.
