So many times over the years i have read people comments about how the older more mature bucks do the breeding of most of the does. I have seen this many times to not be altogether true. Im 57 and hunted every year since i was young and seen many a young buck breed a young doe and a few older bucks breeding does too. I think alot more does are being bred by younger bucks than people think. One thing tho i live in east tx and there arent alot of older deer running around. lol.

Its all about ratio and age structure. In an area with a good buck to doe ratio and a good age structure, I do believe a majority of breeding will be by the more mature bucks. Where you have a 15 - 1 ratio and almost no mature bucks, you may actually see the little nubbers getting in on the action. One way or another, the does will all get bred.
Silver spurs and gold tequila keep me hanging on. Pretty girls and old cantinas give me shelter from the storm.

I agree with Texan. If you have a strong/healthy population of mature bucks and a proper buck/doe ratio, then the youngsters aren't going to get much of a chance. Places I've hunted that had good age structure and ratio I witnessed lots of younger bucks trying but the does weren't going to have it and the mature bucks quickly put a stop to it.

had a lease in SW San Saba Co, That had waaaay too many deer for the CC of the land. But the buck/doe ratio was 1:1. Watched a mature buck chasing a hot doe around one afternoon. A 2 year old tried to get into the action and the older buck promptly ran him into a creek bottom. As the big buck was coming back for the doe, another mature buck appeared. He and the first buck were going at it hard when that little 2 year old popped up out of the creek, punched the doe and took off, while the the two older deer were still locked in battle.

If you have 1:1 and good age structure, who's breeding the 4.5 yr old doe when the 5.5 buck and the 5.5 doe are off together? Exactly, a younger buck. Also, buck mortality increases rapidly as they age, meaning if you have 30 bucks aged 1.5-5.5, there aren't 6 of each age range. It's more likely you have 10 yearlings, 9 twos, 6 threes, 3 fours, and 2 fives, or something like that. So if you have 30 does, how many can your two oldest bucks breed? I understand that does will come in at different times, but you're oldest bucks won't breed nearly as many as we'd like.
The hope is that when the 2.5 year old doe comes in, and there's a couple of young bucks there, that the best of the young bucks is the one that gets the shot.

I've read that many bucks will only breed 2 or 3 does per year. It's not a "one and done" affair. Those bucks tend those does over several days and breed the same doe multiple times.

Read a survey about a high fenced place in South Texas and the biggest and baddest of the biggest and baddest bucks only bred 6 does in the year of the survey.

Do you think the deer realy care how old the other is that's breeding them?
I believe it is an even mix of them all that does the breeding. Just like fouz saw the two older bucks do the fighting while the young one bread the doe. The does don't care what the rack looks like on the buck, they just run till they are tired get nailed and move on. Have watched several does young and old alike be bread by a heard of young bucks. Never seen wt bucks with a harem, its every buck for himself.

Wouldn't it be cool if we older, more mature bucks could go run off the younger bucks at the local college campuses and then pick and choose our does?
