Last few days I have been hunting lions in the Navajo Reservation. A couple of mornings ago, I saw a mature black bear cross the road in front of me as I was roading my hounds up in the Chuska Mountains. It crossed about 75 yards up the hill running from left to right. I asked Steve if he saw the bear and he responded in the negative. I continued to idle up the hill and in about 30 seconds, a LARGE black boar (bear) rolled off a steep bank headed directly at my Luke dog who was about 15 yards in front of my pickup. When as the bear realized that there was a Ford pickup with two Rednecks onboard, the bear turned away and calmly looped across the road in the same direction that the other bear had disappeared. I could be wrong but I am wondering if the bears were mating and the boar, seeing the dog decided to run it out of the area. I talked to a rancher buddy in NM and he said that the boar was likely going to make the dog a meal as the Rez is full of ferel dogs. He feels that the dogs may be on a mature bear's menu. By the way we treed a bear the next morning when the (6) dogs were the aggressors. Adios, Gary

Interesting encounter Mr. Gary. Glad the dogs are safe. Any lion luck? Did you get the bear encounter on video for your show?

A member of the Mescalero Apache tribe told me that they have a saying, "A dog's business is a dog's business". He explained that they do not worry about the things that dogs do. As such, dogs are free to roam and do what they do. Hence the large number of roaming dogs on the Rez. Interestingly, this philosophy applies to most everything and everyone.

Tim, we did not get the bear encounter on video as it happened way too fast. I hunted four mornings and finally struck a lion track on the last day at about 10:00 AM and the wind had gotten up to about 20-25 mph. Of course, there was no snow and the temps ranged from about freezing in the mornings to mid 70's in the afternoons. I was proud of the dogs as they worked the track for about a mile and finally the wind just got to be more than they could handle. I had a buddy with me and his dogs could not take the track and came back to the pickup as they are hotter nosed bear dogs. I took two year old gyps and they were trying to work the track with my older dogs so that made me happy. I just purchased a lion permit in the Mescalero Apache as they are selling 10. The season there runs from Dec. 15th through the end of February. Adios, Gary

Good timing, Gary - would hate for you to lose a dog as a bear snack!

I think a dog would give a bear about the same amount of fight an elk calf would. I'm sure they eat them as a meal of opportunity. If you've ever seen that video of how effortlessly a cougar takes down a Doberman, you can surmise how simple it'd be for a bear.

It would have been over quickly as the boar would have weighed well over 300 pounds while Luke weighs about 50. I was impressed how fat and thick this bear was. We treed one the next day while hunting with a buddy's dogs and it was not nearly as fat. Adios, Gary

great story! maybe the one you treed was not getting as many dogs in it's diet as the first one.
when the going gets really tough, I sit down and rest

True, the dogs are about everywhere and so are the wild horses. I have stumbled across a few of the locals in very unusual places in very cold conditions. Last year, I was following one of the Game Wardens when we drove past an individual lying on the side of a dirt road in the middle of nowhere. There was 6 inches of snow on everything and it was about 25 degrees and the sun was setting. I asked the Game Warden about the corpse the next day and he said that he went back and checked on him and he had just had a little too much to drink. He ended up hauling him home several miles from there. About the next day, they found an elderly gentleman who had frozen to death when he became lost and confused. Adios, Gary

Worked out of Farmington and we drug many off the shoulder of road. Most of the bars out of town have high chain link fences for 2-3 hundred yards along highway to help keep them from getting run over
