Drove over to Pat Mayse early this morning hoping to at least see some deer. No luck in that department. I walked in about East a half mile from the road (1499) on the North side. I tried looking around for some signs of deer but didn't see anything. Set up a quick blind and waited for the sun to come up. Nothing but the rain drops. Went scouting around further in another quarter mile but still nothing. Packed up and hiked out just after 10am. Did I miss something or are there low numbers in that area? I have some upcoming days to hunt at Camp Maxey on the other side of the WMA and I'm debating if I should give that up and try my luck somewhere else. Any input from anyone?

I have turkey hunted out there. Only saw a couple of deer and some sign. I bet it would be a hard deer hunt. But it real pretty country....I would go and have fun.

Thanks for the replies. I enjoyed connecting with nature. I just didn't connect the way that I really wanted to. elmer

I hunted there a number of years ago. We had a party of 3, and hunted two days. No deer were seen. I did not see any deer taken by other hunters. I don't recall even hearing a rifle shot. None of us went back.

Thanks for the info. I have 2 days set up at Camp Maxey just on the other side of the WMA and I'm debating whether or not to put the time in there or try some other public land on those days. I was drawn for 3 days in Nov. to hunt White Oaks. Read some good things about the area. Looking on the map it appears to have a lot of swampy area to it. I figure I'll give it a shot and see what comes of it. All those acres of land and only a handful of people hunting those days should put some odds in my favor. At least that's what I'm hoping. Any suggestions from anyone on a WMA near DFW that has plenty of deer and won't be overly crowded on a Saturday morning? I know that's like asking for a miracle.

Hunted Pat Mayes last year. Camped on the north side of the lake. Hunted unit 6. Saw a few deer and several turkey. Should have shot a legal 8, but we waited to see what else showed. We had a great time and were disappointed to not get drawn this year.

There are some maps of deer density by county that are on-line. "Quality Deer Management Association" is one. I suggest looking at this map, and your choice will be very clear (White Oak).

Thanks Brother Phil. This info helps. Looks like I should be asking for the SE area for my drawn hunt. I'm hoping to be able to scout that area the day before the drawn hunt begins. Maybe I'll get lucky then, plus on the hunt.

Looks like you already got your answer on Pat Mayes. Just an added note: I hunted there many (20?) years ago with my two boys. Two trips and they each got a deer both trips. I never saw anything to shoot at. Sounds like it's gone downhill since.

Yes Sir I got my answer for sure. It's a beautiful area. It's a shame that it's not as productive with higher numbers of deer. I'm sure they're in the area hiding. Just not enough to be consistent.

I hunted there 5-6 years ago.... I saw LOT's of deer towards the bottoms, but I guess word got out and they relocated. The last season I hunted there I tried scouting and hunting other areas with no luck. Best of luck to you and be sure to check and double check the hunting dates as they are somewhat cut up.

Bobcat. I noticed that TPWD didn't really offer any kind of drawn hunt at Pat Mayse which tells me that they know that the numbers are really low there now. I'll be back in the area the first of Dec. so I'll make it a point to scout around the area deeper in just to see if there are any signs of deer. I just find it really hard to believe that nothing is there. Especially since Camp Maxey is looking to harvest a number of deer from their area. I think the deer are probably doing a really good job of hiding. That's all.

Fray. I'll report back and let you know if I find any deer sign when I go to scout the area. I'll be concentrating my efforts between the western side of the lake and hwy 1499. I figure they have to be closer to the water so I'll be humping my way in to check out the shoreline.

Yeah, they're there, just got to know where to look! Head over to the west side and scout out those bottoms.
