I'm in an AR county and I have a spike coming to my feeder regularly. I'm having trouble deciding how old he is. He looks bigger than 1-1/2 to me, but I'm not a real good judge. I have a good picture if someone can upload it for me. I'm on an iPad and it won't let me upload it because it's not a jpg. I just don't want to shoot this deer if he's a young buck with potential. The place I hunt is only 50 acres, but hunting pressure is light in the area so I try to at least cull out bad traits if I can and leave the better bucks to breed. Most spikes are young and you'll be better off by letting them walk, age and grow. Even more important if you don't have many bucks in your area.

I think the best way to tell is see how he physically compares to a mature doe, if you can catch the two of them side by side. If the spike is smaller than the doe you definitely need to let him walk, as he's too young. If he is as large as the doe or bigger then you need to compare him to a young buck like a 6-pointer or so and see how he compares. That might help make your decision a little easier. I live in an AR county too, but some of the spikes I let walk last year appear to be turning into nice little bucks so far.

Yeah he's not older than 2-1/2, but he's not real skinny like a lot of yearlings are. He's a nail horn with slick spikes about 5" long. I have numerous bucks so that's not a concern. Looks like spike stew!
