Saw one just like that years ago. I shot it at the ranch manager's request. Turned out to be a rattlesnake bite with punctures from the fangs visible.

Watch the deer and that may go down in a few weeks.

Lot of them are from an infected thorn. I see one or two per year here on my place.

They are fairly common, more folks notice them now that cameras are so prevalent. The growth is called a seroma, which is "bag" or pocket of skin filled with body fluid (mostly sera). Usually caused by an injury (fighting, fence, etc.). But, it is not infectious. Also not contagious, so no worries about contact with other deer. If they get too large, they can rupture and drain, which can sometimes cause an infection (like any other injury) and/or abscess.

I have had Ibex get it. The vet said it is a hematoma {sp}. I had one Ibex get one on the shoulder and could not catch him. The vet told me to try to shoot a glancing shot with a pellet gun to open it up and let drain. I finally caught the goat and took him to the vet. He cut it open and drained about a quart of blood and puss out of it and then shot it full of iodine. Said it is sometimes caused by getting hit or thorns or whatever.

Probably snake bite.I've seen those before full of lime green puss.....
