Much has been written on the topic from both handgun and rifle perspectives.

The current issue of Deer and Deer Hunting magazine includes a good, thought-provoking article that addresses the issue.

I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt that my 3/4 ton pickup has plenty of knockdown power. But bullets? Not so much.

Shot placement. Good placement, good results. Bad placement, not so good results.

I shot a doe this past weekend with my weatherby.

I'll save the details but my rifle was shooting way high (later confirmed on paper)

I missed one doe trying a neck shot then shot the next one right behind the shoulder, bullet hit and knocked her stone dead. When I got down there it clipped the top of her back. I'm convinced that the sheer speed of the weatherby round sent enough shock to kill her, had it been my .270 I think she would have got up and ran off

Moral of the story.....shoot a weatherby

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Fully agree

If you want a deer to drop right there then shoot the CNS like we do with a high shoulder shot.

I always aim for the ham and try to clip the artery the bigger the bullet the better.

There are a lot of kids that have done the same. IMO, the key is to shoot what you feel comfortable with and concentrate on shot placement.

And for TT85...check your zero trout

i think smaller calibers just get a bad reputation because they are what most of the young ones use and they can be more likely to make a bad shot (disclaimer some kids can outshoot me) I'm just one of those people who never upgraded because I never had a problem taking deer down with it.

I'm gonna pull my all my rifles out next week and take them to the range. I have a .270 that I sighted in back in 01' that I never have had to mess with since.

I put the weatherby up last year and this year it was shooting 5" high and 2" left.... Can't explain it, didn't drop it, to my knowledge it didn't get bumped....maybe someone messed with it playing a joke on me

All mine have been lung shots, and none have made it passed 25 yds. I shoot a .270. Shot placement, shot placement, shot placement.

Bullet design also matters

My dad shoots an old 1894 30-30 with the cheapest bullets he can find, and he drops them with no problems. He is old school. I think a lot of people over think it. But then again we don't take any shots over 200 yds.

^^^ This! Clip an artery, and it leaves a good blood trail, too. I don't know, a Texas heart shot does pretty good. I think anything will go down if you shoot them up the [censored]!

I've only had to make one Texas Heart Shot in my lifetime. And the deer dropped in its tracks.

I public hunt in Arkansas a lot and on the drawn hunts there are NO rifles. Black Powder and Shotguns only...with no buckshot. The only firearm I've ever killed a deer with is a 20 gauge 870. I've never had an animal run more than 40 yards but you better believe I get an ear-full from everyone who knows better than me...My gun will shoot 4 inch groups at 80 yards, but a crack shot could probably get better results than that. Love hunting with that gun.

I've been screaming this very argument for years. I've heard a lot about this mysterious force known as "Knock Down Power", and yet nobody can explain it.

As a homicide investigator you learn that trauma is what kills. Permanent wound channels, tissue and organ damage, and blood loss. The transfer of kinetic energy into a body can cause shock, but is not necessarily responsible for killing.

Therefore, shot placement into critical organs and blood loss is what kills.

It's the only one that I read, having dropped my subscriptions to Outdoor Life and Field and Stream several years ago. Those just seemed to repurpose the same articles with new titles, season after season.

IMO, D&DH covers a lot more on deer behavior and research than any other hunting-related magazine.

Not to give away the jest of the article mentioned, the writer draws attention to the fact that any bullet that misses a deer's central nervous system will not create a knockdown.

Those who tout the benefits of the high shoulder shot (which can damage the spine) will enjoy reading it.
