I wasn't recommending that at all. No way ... no how. I was trying to make the point that it is a very inexpensive item compared to what is charged by human hospitals.

Every time I hear something like this, I remember my dad telling me how he took Frontline for Red bugs one time. My gf at the time asked him if it worked and he told her yeah, right up until he chased the car and got hit.

Bless it, she had red hair, but I swear her roots were blonde.

What about fixing the QUOTE and take my name off it. I didn't say that.

No need to apologize ..... stuff happens. wink

My wife being a veterinarian I definitely don't want anyone to think I was self medicating or otherwise violating the law. That would put her DEA licenses at risk.

Wow had no clue the costs coukd be that high. Guess a little extra protection when in the field is worth it.

There was an old farmer we met near Nacogdoches years ago that said the first time he got bit by a copperhead he went to the doctor. It costs so much that after that whenever he would get bit he would not go to the doctor. Claimed he had been bit a good number of times over the years.

Almost no one dies from snake bites in the US. But from the stories here, it sure costs a lot.

I don't want to be one of the ones that dies from a snake bite. I try to stay clear of all snakes.

Short answer no, and if they do it's usually limited supply. Usually enough to get you started while you are transferred to a facility that does.

Turns out I am immune to rattlesnake venom!
More than likely mine was a dry bite. Either way it looks like it saved me a bunch o'money. I was just out a copay and a small dr bill from my emergency room visit.

Talked with an ER doctor dove hunting a few years back. He said that he is hesitant to give anti venom for every snake bite. He mentioned dry bites, or bites with minimal venom didn't require the anti venom. He also said that some people have really, really bad reactions to the anti venom, worse than the venom from the bite. He treated the symptoms of the bite, and the effects of the venom, but not with the anti venom immediately.

Then everyone else who has their own insurance will have to shoulder the burden and it will be free to you. I'd say go for it.

I don't understand why hospitals in Texas don't have it on hand. The hospitals here in Tennessee stock it most of the time, and we have way fewer bites than you guys.

Friend that was on my lease got bit on his hand at his house ironically a few years ago pulling weeds by a copperhead. 3 vials of antivenom was $9,000 each plus hospital bill. He was allergic to the anti venom so was a waste and nothing else happened. All antivenom is the same I believe.

From my lease Wichita Falls is the closest with it. Wear snake boots all the time cheap insurance and watch where I put my hand.

Yes, there is a shelf life. And some of it is 12 months or so. That may be the reason.

I wish I could tell you exactly what are the nuances between the different anti-venoms, but Im not up on the subject anymore. I do know theres a lot more than one kind of anti venom though most of what we are concerned with is for pit vipers. That being said I guess Crofab is the shizz for anti venom, and Ive heard it quoted at anything from 8K to 26K per vial. Maybe one of the real snake guys on the forum can chime in, because I'll bet they are well versed...

We got a rattlesnake vaccine for our dog, and get a booster every year... its like $50 a year.

Theoretically will greatly reduce the need for ant-venom.

I wonder why they dont have that available for people? I think I would get one, just in case!
