My group got drawn for archery Mason Mountain WMA Javelina. So pumped. If any of you have hunted there before, care to give any tips? Thanks in advance.

The lodge is nice. Call now and reserve a room. We didn't see any javelina when we were there and didn't talk to anyone that did. We did kills some hogs and our limit of management deer.

Scalebuster I called and got the reservation. I will not hesitate to shoot a wild pig at all.

X 2 what scalebuster said. I have hunted MM on two occasions and loved being there. Stayed in the lodge both times with good people. I enjoyed the hunts even though I was not successful. Good luck with your hunt.

We hunted there last week, for management Gemsbok. My 12 y/o son scored. I'll write and post pictures of that adventure soon. We saw several javelina. They were all by the stand near the Windmill in the Northeast part of the "South Vaca" pasture. They really like 20% Protein Range Cubes. I picked them up at Tractor Supply, and a few of the other guys picked them up at the feedstore in Mason. It takes a rough "4WD Only" road to get there. Exactly what my Rubicon was made for I believe he assigned us that area because I had the Jeep. I'd also add that it seems like the compartments get assigned as you arrive, so I'd try to be early Take a camera, lots off really cool stuff to see. Watch out for scorpions - I killed one in the bathroom of the Lodge. They have a walk in cooler and big ice machine - no reason to haul ice from Houston, like I did. Congratulations, you should have a great trip. Mason Mountain is just Awesome!!!!

ChickenFried, did you see many whitetails? I was drawn for the management hunt Nov. 1-3. Are all the roads pretty rough? Wondering about ground clearance on a new pickup - which isn't a lot? I hunted there back in the early 90's, but don't remember a whole lot other than seeing some neat critters.
Thanks,

Yes, we saw many whitetail. Somewhere I heard they have a lower than average whitetail herd, but everyone I talked to saw several deer. Stand 41, at the top of the hill, is where we sat most of the time. We had 3-4 spike bucks that were around often, and few fork-horns also. And we saw several nice 8-points, and one really big 10-point.
I'd sit there if I were looking for a management deer, but I doubt you'll have trouble finding deer anywhere on the place.
Most of the roads are crushed granite - easy to drive, but dusty. Only the road marked "4WD ONLY" was rough. It is an old jeep trail

Great staff, great lodge, cafe in town is a pretty good place to eat, would not eat at the Mason Cooper's BBQ. Lot of animals to watch even if you can't shoot them.
Don't talk the talk if you didn't walk the walk.
