One can be installed on a factory barrel, by a gunsmith. Yet, most factory sporter barrels lack the meat to install a 5/8" X 24 thread, so you will have to buy a brake with a 1/2" or 9/16" thread. Each gunsmith wants a certain diameter to deal with, to cut threads. One option of brake is Harrels Precision. They do produce narrow O.D. brakes that do not look too bulky on a sporter barrel, and they have 1/2", 9/16", and 5/8" threads available

Geeze, I'm starting to loose the excitement of her taking up this hobby due to all the money signs flying around It is a very worthwhile expenditure and will bring back lots of good for you. On muzzle brakes, gunsmiths that work with hunting rifles can install Vais style brakes very easily on sporter barrels and they work surprisingly well.

My wife has been hunting with me for 10 years. She has a 7mm-08 Ruger that has been her go to gun for that time period. I traded guns this spring and acquired a 7x57 AI that she has taken away from me. She is not afraid of the recoil but the noise does bother her so she doubles up on the hearing protection. Try to let her decide by allowing her to try several calibers.

Look at the Hornady Custom Lite ammo mentioned above. My daughter used it in her .243 and uses it now in her 7mm-08 which she shoots very well and makes game very dead..
7mm-08 Browning X-Bolt Micro, take a look at it, very accurate and quite manageable for a woman. My daughter is 26 but not very big.

7x57, here is something to think about. Everything costs double, guns, ammo, license, outfitter fees and it goes on!!!! But I do enjoy having her with me.

Super info here guys and I really appreciate it! I'm really leaning on the 243 but not 100% just yet.
And I have a question in reguards to this muzzle break situation. I've read a few comments suggesting to use one, and please exscuse my ignorance as I've never dealt with one, but would I need to buy a gun that has a barrel ready to accept one or can one be installed on a factory barrel? Remington 700 sps might be threaded, or savage 10

7x57, Sorry about that error. I will not tell my wife but she knows how men & guns are, especially after they (the men) get a few years on them.

Let's not short change the women folk. Mrs. HnF is 5' 1/2" tall with short arms. I started her out on .308 30+ years ago. I ordered her a Winchester Mod 70 Youth in .308. She was shown the correct way to shoulder a gun and the eye relief on the 3X9X50 is set for her. She shoots full house 150gr and is an exceptional shot. She took that "one shot one deer" thing seriously..... FWIW She's not real fond of my .300WSM or the 45-70 but she'll shoot anything in the safe!

What Grizz says is for real. The gun fits, the eye relief is correct. Comfortable shooting position and gun fit cure many recoil issues
10-4 on the .300 Wissum, it might be a little stout but you see ole what's her name on TV, Mellissa Bachman shoots a .300 WSM, does very good with it. too much for me though...

Whatever rifle/caliber she gets, be sure to practice. Not all people but some buy rifles for inexperienced shooters, take them to the range once and that's it. Then deer season comes, the inexperienced shooter makes a bad shot, and everyone blames the caliber. .243 win gets a bad wrap more because of poor shot placement than actual performance IMO. Ok, I'm off...

My boys started out with the .223 at age 6 and killed MANY deer with them without incident before graduating to .243's at about 10. It also killed plenty well. They have both moved on to a .308 in their teenage years.

I bought my wife a Creedmoor, she handled my 257wby fine but I'm usually with her and a LA 26" barrel is a little rough in a blind with two people. She loves the little creedmoor, unfortunately I do too... it's very mild recoil and report

Here she goes! I started her off with one of my scoped 22's just to familiarize her and then moved up to the 22 mag. After a hour of shooting she said she was ready. I handed her my little Remington 243 and we went back over all the basics and what not. She never looked back, while shooting 15-20 rounds and stacking them in a 2" dot at 100yards! Not bad for her 1st time shooting a rifle. Oh and the trash talking has already started about who's bringing home the big buck lol!!

Congratulations! Friendly suggestion - bring the rifle butt higher in the shoulder pocket. Have her extend her right arm straight beside the stock, a pocket will form, put the butt there on the collar bone. On a heavier recoiling rifle, in the position in the photo, the toe of the stock will punch her in the boob and hurt. Congratulations and good luck to both of you.

I got on to her a few times and stressed the importance of that finger business, but she did really well. Hell I couldn't tell you if this was taken 1 second or 10 seconds before the shot, but thanks.

What rifle is she shooting?
Reason I ask is the bolt reminds me of the old Eddystone 1917 handle.

That bolt shape looks familiar. I think it is either a Remington 600 or 660.

I'd recommend a 7mm-08 or a .25-06. Both low recoil and I folded many hogs with my .25-06 but i also slapped them right behind the ear 6.5x55 Swede is a sweet shooting caliber but factory ammo is not always readily available at the local store.

My wife shoots a 257Weatherby. She says it thumps. But the noise bothers her more than the recoil
