I'm taking my 11yr old on a javelina hunt and wonder about caliber and bullet selection as I want to harvest for consumption and not destroy the animal. He can shoot an AR15 in 223, bolt 22-250 or lever 30-30, anything else I have is probably too much for a javelina. I'm leaning towards the 223 but not sure about which bullet to use, I want to cause minimal damage to the meat. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Javelina are pretty easy to kill. Just about any soft point in 223 would do the job. Let him get comfortable with whatever gun you choose and go from there.

Good luck on the hunt

In my experience, Javalinas aren't tough to kill. Winchester sells 223 ammo with a 64 gr soft point. That should work just fine. If you reload, there are many options (Barnes, Nosler Partition, 65 gr Sierra GK, 64 gr Nosler BSB).

Either the .223 or 22-250. Just about any bullet will work fine. Shoot it right with a ballistic tip at fairly close distance, and the bullet wont have time to expand and destroy meat. If he is a real good shot, have him go for the head/ear hole shot so you dont have to worry about meat loss

Agree...that Javi's are not hard to kill (given proper shot placement).

My best advice is to aim such the bullet impacts the 'collar' about midway up the body.

Most folks tend to shoot behind that...and while it is a lethal shot, they can run quite a ways into some really nasty terrain and their insides will be a vile mess.

Stay on the collar and most of the time your Javi will drop right there and field dressing will be much less a mess for you.

Good luck on your hunt.

Flint.

In my opinion a 223 will rip up just as much as any of the rest of those. I would concentrate on a neck/head shot with whatever he is most comfortable with and run with it.

Sounds like 223 is the winner, thanks for the opinion on bullet selection and collar as reference for shot placement. We'll be heading to the shooting range soon to focus on that.
Hunt is not until January '17 but better start early to correct anything that needs improved.

I agree with most of that, but the faster a bullet is going, the faster it will expand. It will destroy more meat up close.
