Just getting back from my first pronghorn hunt with a good hunting buddy. First time pursuing pronghorn for both of us and we were doing a do it yourself hunt. We each were able to take beautiful antelope in the plains of the Texas panhandle. I'm thankful for the meat we are butchering for the freezer today and the experience of a spot and stalk hunt that we executed as a team in this scenery.

Ahead of the trip I made a decoy to help us on our stalks on the flat plains. It was real simple and I was skeptical that it would work, but man did this thing get the job done. We spent Sunday spotting groups and practicing our approach and getting a sense of field judging the animals. After a little trial and error, we would slowly approach a good buck with two decoys inline (buddy had one as well). Once we got within about 300-350 yards, the shooter would stay put with one decoy and then one of us would start heading up at a 45 in the direction the animal was facing. The antelope would focus on both decoys. Each time it was focused on one of us, the other would move in closer and vice versa. This worked extremely well. On the last stalk on Sunday I was within 100 - 125 yards of a good animal and after throwing him a few calls, he closed in another 20 yards straight at me before having enough and taking off.

This was the antelope I took. Couldn't be happier about him for my first. Lot's of wind and only let us get to about 260-270 yards for the shot.

This is my buddies. He was with a group of does and was really engaged with the decoys. Thrashing his horns around and showing off. He closed half the distance straight to us, for a shot under 100 yards.

These are truly unique animals that have my utmost respect. Really hoping to be able to get another shot at chasing them up in the panhandle in years to come.
Cheers,
Jason

Thanks y'all.
This was a private land hunt up in Hartley Co. A friend of mine's family has a cattle ranch there and a few family members didn't want to hunt this year, so we got first shot at two tags. Feel very fortunate for the opportunity. I've been putting in for the Rita Blanca drawn hunt for years, so maybe I'll get another shot down the road. Cheers.

We used a decoy for our first hunt also. But ..... we used a COW decoy. It shields the hunter and the antelope don't focus in on it as they do on an antelope decoy. But obviously your decoy worked!

Great job. Thanks for the pics.
