Yesterday I got my food plots plowed up (about 10 acres) and broadcast my seed. I broad cast a wildlife mix of wheat, bob oats, winter peas, rapeseed and ryegrass with extra wheat and rye mixed in. I tried to pull a chain drag over it but the 4 wheeler started overheating and I wasn't able to get it all drug.

The forecast looks like it is going to start raining before I get off work and we are expecting an inch of rain. Do you guys think it will come up Ok just being broadcast over the plowed field or do you think I will need to replow, broadcast and drag?

If you get a good inch or more, you'll probably be okay. Problem will be if you get a light rain.

If you get a good rain it will come up okay. I have planted leftover oats and ryegrass with a road feeder on the side of the road before and it come up fine with a good rain. The birds might give you heck if it don't rain enough. Can you put the drag behind a pickup?

Think so too. The small seed should be fine since it needs less depth, the larger seed may have more difficulty, just hope it is a deluge and the seed gets washed off the mat STS.. That is why I don't like large/small mixed seeds, depth is hard to control. This is one reason though that over seeding is recommended when broadcasting.

Very light rain will be a "do over," but a heavy one and you will be fine.

You'll be fine. I've planted food plots every way you can imagine and it always comes up.

Good point. Most of us just use the equipment we have and hope for the best.

Out of curiosity, what did you plow with? Tractor? Could you have used it to pull the drag?

Yes, I plowed with a big tractor, it is a 140hp deutz-farh M600. Then I used my 30hp Kubota to sling the seed with the 3 point spreader. I was slinging the seeds while my son was on the 4 wheeler pulling a chain drag. The 4 wheeler started overheating while I was still spreading seeds. By the time I finished slinging the seeds it was getting close to dark so we just packed up and headed home. The chain drag is only 6ft wide and needs to be pulled fairly fast for it to keep debris from building up in it and that little Kubota is one rough riding dude when you try to drive it quickly off road.

I thought I would be able to get out there tonight after work and get the chain drag over it, but I think the rain may start before I can get out there.

Supposed to get here in Wise co around 11ish, you may be able to saddle up that 30horse and work under the lights.
