Are you planning on going to Raton and then getting on I-25? My dad just left Colorado Springs today headed to Mason, Tx. I can ask him about road conditions.

MacDaddy, Going 287 to Limon, Colorado from Amarillo, you bypass Raton N.M.. Limon is about 60 miles due east of Denver.

...and theres a country cafe in some small town way south of Limon that is a must eat at for breakfast, across the street from a city park in the middle of town...that was a Looong time ago..but still remember the pancakes and steak and eggs ...BH had to drive a while from there and freaked at the idea of driving thru Denver & over Berthoud Pass to Winter Park.

Ron, Denver is the reason we are going that route. Hope to go around most if not all of Denver. Ron, can you remember how the road was? Can it be safely driven at 65 mph? Thanks

Did it a few years ago.... two lane.. fairly nice road with plenty of opportunities to pass. I would look up construction though, as we got stopped and spent about an hour as they were working on a large stretch of it.

We have driven multiple routes from Dallas to Denver area, close to Denver, or West of Denver, either skiing or going hunting. The 287 route is very pretty, but it is definitely slower. We have timed it, and if you go 35 North up to Salina, KS, and 70 West, it is over an hour faster. The 287 route always has some construction. And the speed limits are slower, and you have to slow down for all the small towns you go through. If you want to have a more scenic drive, or enjoy going through the smaller towns, 287 route is great. But if you just want to get there as fast as possible, the 35 to 70 route is fastest.

^^^ That is correct! When we did go that route and went through Dalhart, we always put on Pat Green's song "I like Texas", if wasn't already playing something by PG.

All depends on how you travel you like to cruise along then 287 is for you, you are interested in time take I35 per Chad especially from your part of the world.

I go to Wyo 2x a year and will be making the journey in 15 days and I'm planning to go up I25 this time and clear Denver at 1a.m so traffic not an issue. Denver during rush hour is a PIA and the only way I have found to deal with it is drive it at night.

What is your final? You mention driving around Denver are you taking 70 into Denver then around on toll road or up to Brush then 34 W?

I live in Dumas, 87 / 287 from Amarillo to the state line at Stratford will be 4 lane good road all the way, I have not gone past the state line in many years so I can not answer to that stretch of road

Thank You

Went that way three weeks ago on our way to Seattle. It was terrible. Rough. Won't make that mistake twice. From Texas/Oklahoma border to Limon sucked.

I will 2nd the route thru Kansas is the way to go... Out of the 5 trips we have done back/forth to WA state that one has been the best at getting up to Denver.

Thanks Guys, You have made up my mind. We are headed to Plains, Montana for an elk hunt later part of Oct. I will be taking I-35 North, not sure if I will go the I-70 route or continue on north to York, Nebraska then west.

Today I'd go either up thru Kansas and west on I-70, jusr boring as crap...or mebbe from Dallas to Amarillo then I-40 to just short of ABQ, then turn north at the monster truck stop cutoff that goes up the east side of Sante Fe to pickup I-25 north. Like others we like to start these kinda trip at nite, and plan the Denver area transit after rush hour...which now looks like the LBJ Frwy to McKinney experience on Central Expwy's rush hour.

Just remembered your starting point is Pittsburg...and a waste of time to go to Dallas to get to Denver...and lots easier to pickup I-40 in OKC. After 40 years worth of getting hassled for wearing my white TX Plates in Oklahoma I try to not spend any more time & $$'s on green stamps or eats/fuel as possible on the wrong side of the Red River.
Have a good trip and stay safe.
Ron

Ron,I am open for any/all suggestions. I think at this time I will go north from Pittsburg to Tulsa, then west to I-35, then north again. Not sure of roads (Hwy 82) going west out of Paris.

No need to go all the way into Tulsa, you can pickup I-40 at Henrietta, then west to OKC & make the choice either way North to Wichita up I-35, or west to the I-25 big time shortcut at US Hwy 84 just west of Santa Rosa NM & hits I-25 just south of Las Vegas NM. I -40 going into Abq is a deep canyon road with LOTS of 18 wheelers...and not a lot of shoulders as I remember it.

Took younest son to college in San Jose Cali that way, thru Abq, Winslow, Flagstaff etc to Bakersfield and north to Hwy 46 and west into Paso Robles ...and he squealed like a little girl couple times in the I-40 W canyon when the Big Guys would "edge" his Honda Civic over...fun fun fun at 75-80++ mph going down hill and the BG's empty trailers "floating" around from lane to lane and no where for us to get out of the way, coming into Abq from the east.

FWIW we did Carrollton to Carmel in 30 hours flat total time, including a 3- 4 hour sleepover when the ChiP's ran us & the other BG's off at sunrise outside of Needles just across the border of Cali & AZ & a quick 1st dip in the Pacific for the kid where 46 west of Paso Robles hit the PCH. We played on the beach at Carmel for a couple hours to work out the kinks thst afternoon, and crashed for the nite overlooking the water at Monterrey. What a trip...I was in Cleveland 3 days later making sales calls...and suffering from the culture shock differences from San Jose to Cleveland & St Louis..

Click on this ---> Route

You'll see it doesn't make much if any difference which way you go.

No reason to go through Denver if you're going to Plains Mt from Pittsburgh unless you enjoy playing in the construction zones between Salina Ks & Longmont Co.

The Cafe is Ruby's, and it is in Limon the lady who owns the cafe is my Aunt. Really good breakfast and lunch.
