Greetings... Looking for any feedback on the Savage Model 10 Trophy Hunter in 223 (or any other caliber I suppose). Got a chance at picking one up at a good price but have never owned a Savage.

I love Savages, have 4 of them. Action is not as smooth as a Remington but accuracy is generally excellent. I have a 12FV in 223 that will shoot 1/2 MOA all day long. Not sure what the barrel twist is on the Model 10 you're looking at but that will dictate bullet weight. Also, very easy to change barrels, I've put new barrels on most of mine. I say go for it if you like the deal.

Also love savages and they are plenty accurate. I dont care for the triggers and always replace em with a custom trigger

as long as you stay with lighter bullets it will do fine.

For the money, Savage is hard to beat. If you have a little more money you could buy a Tikka. Tikka's have the best stock actions and triggers IMO.

That said, I do love Savage rifles, I own 2 Savages and 1 Tikka. The rifle in my picture is a Savage .308 I rebarreled in 6.5 Creedmoor. My brother bought a Savage 10 in 6.5 Creedmoor and that rifle out of the box can make 3 bullet holes touch at 100 yards.

I had a Savage Model 11 308 that would shoot lights out. Just sold it since rifles that cost $1.50 a shot just aren't my thing. It was easily a 1/2-MOA rifle after the first couple of cold bore shots. It was MOA if you took the first 5 shots out of the barrel. Good rifles overall. Not the same level or the same price as a Tikka, but better than anything they compete with price-wise.

Yes, I had a savage 22-250 and it shot 52gr and lighter bullets well. Heavier than that then there's would be fliers. I've heard from other savage 223 and 22-250 owners about the same.

I've got two of the 12FV's. One in .243, and the other in .223. I have never personally handled, or shot, any other rifle that is as accurate as the .243.

Savage may leave a little to be desired on the over-all finish, fit, and appearance, but they put the money where it matters and that is in the barrels. I have much more expensive rifles that are appealing to the eye but when I need to put the bullet where it matters every time I always pick up a Savage.

This is my experience as well. I have a Precision Carbine in 223 and a Lightweight Stainless in 308. They aren't my favorite rifles but they are my most accurate. Load development is boring because they shoot everything really well and very consistent.

Savage offers 1-9 twist on most all of their 223 rifles, and you can get 1-7 twist on a couple models.
A 1-9 twist will shoot up to 75 grain bullets just fine, I shoot them out of my 12 FLVSS 223 all the time.

The Savage 12 series is the most accurate rifle (out of the box with factory ammo) on the market.

Thanks for all the reply's... Sounds like I'll be "pulling the trigger" so to speak. I agree with some, the fit / finish doesn't look as good as the Tikka etc. but for the price, it seems like a deal. Gonna be a truck / UTV gun anyways so it aint gotta be pretty.
