I have a 6.5 swed rifle that i love to use but how does it compare to the 6.5 creedmore when it comes to the ballistic side?

I would assume the swede when loaded for modern rifles has more case capacity and will have a slight speed advantage. I have always like the swede, cool old caliber. It requires a long action though I believe.

The 6.5x55 is rated at 55K psi. The 6.5 CM is rated at 63K psi. In a modern rifle, you can easily push the 6.5x55 pressures up to the 60-63K psi. If you do this, the 6.5x55 should gain about 100-150 fps over the 6.5 CM. A 260 Rem will be about 50-70 fps faster than a 6.5 CM. The 6.5x55 has more case capacity than a 260, and I have pushed a modern Sako 6.5x55 faster than a 260 Rem with the same bullet and same powder.

Partial thread hijack warning... So how does 6.5x55 compare to the 6.5x47 (i think is the other one)? I'm sure they are close enough for all practical purposes but what the minor differences that u would choose one over the other?

6.5 X 47 makes less velocity than the 6.5 X 55 by a significant margin. But the X47 uses a small rifle primer, and with routine annealing brass can last 10+ firings. It produces one of the lowest ES/SD of any cneterfire cartridge.

6.5x47 Lapua is a wonderful cartridge. It and the Creedmoor are very similar. There are fans of both and rightfully so.

I have a 6.5x55 in a modern rifle. It was purchased before the Creedmoor became available. I've not seen the need to go to a Creedmoor in a bolt action rifle. I would like to own an AR in 6.5 Creedmor.
Don’t roll those bloodshot eyes at me.

I have a Ruger M77 Mk. II in 6.5x55mm and love it. If you already have the 6.5 Swede and like it, you really don't gain anything by switching.

It's hard to believe a cartridge designed in 1891 remains such a terrifically efficient design.

I hear all the time about "modern" 6.5X55 loads but haven't found them. Any advice on where to look? I own one and love it and I would love to get a few more FPS out of it.

Are you looking for load data or actual ammo? I can load some 6.5x55 ammo to modern pressures of about 60K psi, and get the better speeds of the older, slower ammo. Just let me know.

Having had a T3 Swede that was out of the box and untuned mebbe the most accurate rifle I've ever owned, and regret ever trading it on another new to me shiny object...it is commonly unknownn that factory ammo is loaded to the lower PSI's demanded for possible SAFE usage in guns that were built in the 1890's-1900's thru the 1940's or 50's, whose design and raw materials used by the manufacturer in those days is not up to the same standards as a "Modern" 6.5x55SE of today....SE aka Swedish Express
** the SE designation denotes the Improved 2nd version when the Norwegian/Swedish Military Commission that approved the 6.5x55 for their common military use changed the specs and bullet weights slightly from the original design approval.
The differences in Modern Loads & PSI's can be seen as defined by one of recent Hornady reloading manuals, and maybe some others too. Ron

I love the Barnes TTSX bullets but as far as I know, there are no factory loads for them in 6.5 Swede. Just got my second batch of reloads from Chad with 120 grain Barnes. So far every critter I have shot with that ammo has not taken a step.

...and how Chad can provide a premium service with ammo you can't find anywhere on the shelf, at reasonabe prices.
GTK that when I get toooo olde to reload anymore I have a source - since Chad is younger than both my son's who don't shoot, much less reload - for the stuff I want to use, rather than depend on the vagaries of what some bean counter of a marketing guy tells his ammo company to build...BTDT and WHY I still reload a little bit. Mine is a old carl gustaf with a 24in barell and it shoots as well as any rifle i have ever had except one. That was another 6.5 that i had redone and was even more accurate but had a 29 in barrel and was a little long for the woods.

I don't know that I would consider your rifle a "modern" rifle to push the pressures up over the normal loads of the 6.5x55.

I have .270's though, so I really can't justify it for the kind of shooting I do.

If I were rebarreling a 270 to something it would be either a 280AI or 6.5-06 staying away from the short action rounds unless it were a 6.5-284 or a 284 which can use the longer length if they are throated right. With my other choices I would to with 280 the oldest of the ballistic triplets 6.5X55, 260 and 6.5 Creed it doesn't really matter that much IMO but consistent low ES edge might go to the Creedmoor but then bring in the 6.5X47 into the mix and it will win that but at speeds that more closely match the older loads for the 6.5X55 IIRC

Didn't want to start another thread so I'll ask during this conversation if that's ok, what practical purpose does the 6.5 serve? Not being facetious, just trying to learn more about calibers and their uses. Is it a big game round? If so, how big? I know they are very popular. How is recoil on them compared to say a .270 which is what I use for deer? Great looking rifle though.

More BC and bullet weight than the 6mm and more speed and BC than the .30 cal.
Same can be said for the the 7mm-08, if we're only talking short action rounds.
