Except for the pies Bluebonnet is way overrated. Hilltop is good but pricey. Leona General Store makes a really good ribeye. I need to get out to Comstock and try that place.

Of the 10 listed, I have been to 4: Mary's, Bluebonnet Cafe, Poor Richard's Cafe, and Hilltop Cafe. Poor Richard's is always busy, but the food is sub-par. Hilltop Cafe is great and might be my favorite Chicken Fried Steak I have had ever.

Having Mary's at #2 makes me wonder about the other places rated in this article.

Try The Cafe in Graford,Texas and you will throw rocks at Marys which has gone down hill in the past few years.

no telling how many times I have eaten at the Bluebonnet in Marble Falls, grew up in Burnet and my dad had several service stations around MF. They really are a bit over rated in my opinion the last 10-15 years other than their pies are still some of the best I have ever had. The wife and I did a day trip for Valentine's day a year or so back, stopped at the Bluebonnet for lunch, the meat loaf was good (not great) and the sides were all pretty good (definitely home cooking with a touch of sugar). But the highlight of that little stop was Coconut cream with calf slobbers (meringue). For what it's worth, this has become a huge attraction (like Cooper's in Llano) for all the yuppies and weirdos from Austin and is likely overrated in part to that huge draw.

PMK : I think the older we get, the more great places we have eaten at with improved selections of food combined that with our own improved abilities to cook better meals kind of takes away some or diminishes some of those old great memories of those few special places.

Back when there was not a lot of close/nearby competition and a lot less general knowledge of what all is out there to compare to, I bet their food was hard to beat. Probably still way good eating up

I am starting to come to the conclusion that this is what the reality is and I'm still young comparatively. I've been to a fair amount of "the best" something places that have had been in multiple articles and such. More often than not they are just ok and a waste of time. My most recent expedience was with Goodson's Cafe in Tomball, at one time they had the alleged best chicken fried steak. Well I beg to differ it was just another fried piece of meat. My neighbor apparently is related to the owners and she got butt hurt when I told her that it was an overrated meal. The problem at times is going when with high expectations and just being let down.

very true Stub! Likewise, years ago, there were about half of the tables open at any point in time, not the mass of people forming a 30-45 minute waiting time. I think the cooks are more rushed to get the meals out to the table, so more people can be filed on thru ... taking away from the care given in preparation like years ago. People are in much more of a rush now than the simpler times of yesteryear.

It's amazing how long good reputations can hang on. Case in point is Goodsons in Tomball mentioned in the post above. When "Ma Goodson" ran her restaurant she did in fact make the best CFS I ever ate. Their food has been completely average for many years now and people still rave about it.

Yep! Goodson's. We moved to Houston in 1976, and when the wife's folks came to visit, we took them to Ma Goodson's for chicken fried. It was at the old location, which I think was a bit NE of downtown. We all had the CFS, and I think the 'large' was an extra 25 cents. It was huge and it was good. The fries were under the steak. My Father-in-Law talked about that steak for the rest of his life. Was it really that good, or was it just that big? I don't know. In later years the steak got smaller and didn't taste that spectacular anymore, though it probably never was that darned good.

Only place where the food ever made me cry was in NO, at Commander's Palace. I had the most memorable meal of my life, and still remember it as so, after 35 years. I really did get misty eyed. It was THAT good. Still in first place.

I don't eat fried food often, maybe a handful of times a year, so when I do, I want the best.
Every time I see Mary's getting rave reviews on their CFS, I wonder what those people consider a bad one. Paper thin, too much garlic and greasy as all get out. Mary's does have good livers and gizzards, and the fajitas are worth a look.

The Bluebonnet IMO is way over rated. I have tried it three times and consider it average. The pies are good, but not as good as the Koffe Kup in Hico.

I was in Conroe last year for a day, and made my way to Tomball to try Goodsons famous CFS. It was very average, but not bad.

The poster that made mention of "The Café" in Graford throwing rocks at Mary's is spot on. The Café has good food for the most part.

The Shed in Edom is really good, their pies are wicked amazing. Lucky enough to live down the road from it. Mary's, Gave it 3 tries won't be a fourth. Hilltop is so so based on the price, if it was a bit less expensive it would be more worth it.
