Can anyone share previous experience there? Areas to avoid due to overcrowding? Better chances east or west of i-45? Any relevant thoughts?

There's no deer there. Nothing but barren pine forest. Better off going way up north to other National Forests.

I wont point you directly to the spots I hunt, but got a spike last year and saw plenty north of that one road by the tree with the orange marker

Try a PM, it might get you farther. I don't personally hunt deer, but I know that if you do some research on this site then you might be more informed. I drove through the forest on the first day of rifle deer season in 2012 and there were trucks everywhere. I was driving FM 1375. Get a forest map from the USFS website or local office in New Waverly. It is neat how there is so much of the forest spread out across the area. Assuming you have little experience on public land(which very well may be a poor assumption), try walking your arse off and then walk it off again and you might have better chances of harvesting a buck. Hunt during the week for a more isolated experience. Good luck!

I have spent a little bit of time in the Sam mostly hunting pigs. Typically when I am hunting pigs I see plenty of deer but when I hunt deer they are gone. I like to target the old growth areas since that is where the food sources are. I never hunt opening weekend or weekends so I dont experience the crowd as much. Hunting the SAM is hard so you have to put the effort in by scouting and doing a lot of walking. I have already put a lot of miles inthat forest so I have a general idea of where I want to be. I prefer pigs so I will stay in the creek bottoms. Good luck

Are you limited to deer only or can get a hog if opportunity presents?

You can shoot a hog during daylight hours only but it is legal to hunt them all 365 days a year in the SAM. I do most of my hog hunting from the day after deer season in January to late March when it gets too warm again. But you can take your rifle up in the SAM right now and shoot a hog even though it is BOW season for deer. It would just piss off the bowhunters though so that is why I dont do it. And it is still too hot! But perfectly legal. But when you do shoot you better make sure its a hog because every game warden out there is going to come see what you shot.

Use to hunt there allot and we camped at Stubblefield. The campground was a zoo and we finally started staying at Huntsville SP. I found that I saw more deer during the week, as they were very skittish on weekends.
