Looking to quail hunt this year at Matadaor WMA. Im wanting to take my young dog to get on some wild birds I've never been before and wanting some help getting info. As far as I see I only need the $48 public access pass, then just so up on the open dates (is this correct?). Also wanted to know is the camping area primitive or do they have community showers etc? Any info would help.

You can call them and the lady will give you all the info. Their number is on the TPWD website. They have no RV hookups or anything of that nature there. It's very basic.

Beware of the pigs down there as they are THICK. They can make a mess of a dog in a pretty big hurry.

They have 2 primitive camp sites there. No water & no electricity. They do have new outhouses and thats it. You are allowed to have a generator at the first camp site but not at the second one.

No reservations, just pay the $48 once on site stop by the check station, fill out forms, and boom you are ready.

The campsites have nothing but outhouses, no running water, and no reservation needed.
Be aware that vehicles are only allowed on designated roads. No 4-wheelers except for disabled hunters.
Some of the roads are good with 2-Wheel drive, but even in dry weather, some are so sandy you may need a 4x4.
Be sure to carry water for your dogs, other than the river bottom, there are only about a dozen water troughs scattered across the WMA.

Expect a herd of folks on opening weekend, but it should taper off pretty quick.

We all need to practice Whoa more.

drove by coming home from SD. It had a lot of good grass. Should be good. As with all public access guys who walk well away from roads do better.
