I am looking at getting a 17HMR. Need recommendations for a reasonably priced scope & rings. I had a Nikon prostaff and Leupold rings on my last 17HMR and never could get it to shoot well and never could figure out if the issue was the rifle being picky with ammo or a scope quality or rings problem.

Just looking for the cheapest rig that would be good at 100 yards for punching paper. I'm leaning towards the synthetic/stainless rifle.

I have a cheap set of rings with a red field 3x9 on my marlin and it will drive tacks.

A hammer does a better job at driving tacks, but whatever works for you.

I have warn rings that I lapped and and a Mueller scope on my bolt 22LR. I head shoot squirrels at 125 yards at the feeder.

I have a pair of Talley rings and Leupold vx-2 3-9 (rimfire) efr and find it quite suitable.

29 dollar NC Star and some extra rings I had laying around.
I do plan on upgrading one day but so far it's done everything I wanted it to do.

It ain't easy being me.

Thanks to all for the responses. I would say my budget is $100-$200. Looking at Leupold Rifleman, Nikon Prostaff or Buckmaster II, Vortex Crossfire, BSA Sweet 17, but willing to consider whatever. Don't know anything about Mueller.

Are there any strong opinions on Savage vs Marlin? CZ is out of my price range and doesn't make anything I particularly like the looks of anyway. I'm leaning towards a stainless bull barrel Marlin, but haven't made any firm decisions. The Savage bull barrel I used to have would never consistently shoot under 1.5" with any ammo I tried. I had Leupold rings and a Nikon Prostaff on it. Always wanted to like the gun, but never did.

BSA Sweet 17 6-18x40, Simmons Predator/Varmint 4.5-18x44, and Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 4x12-40 all look really intriguing for the price.

I had never heard of Mueller before either. It was a popular choice in an arfcom thread on the Savage 22LR that I was buying. Had a lot of great reviews in there so I went with it. It should fall in your budget and it has target turrets. I wouldn't hesitate to put it on a rimfire again.

Speaking of that, does anyone know what the difference is between the Prostaff and Prostaff rimfire and Buckmaster II? Only about $25 in price difference between the 3 models if you're looking at 3-9x40, but the Prostaff 4-12x40 is quite a bit more expensive than all the other models within those series.

DNZ Game Reaper base and Vortex Diamondback scope. I think the total was about $250.

I have a 3-9 Simmons El Cheapo on mine, no complaints on the accuracy but it definitely deserves a better scope. Will be putting on a quality optic eventually when I get the others in the safe upgraded.

Mueller's are great scopes for the price...look at the APV. I have one on my .17 and really like it.

Thanks. What is the difference in APT vs APV? Amazon has the APV for $120.

Biggest difference I think is APT is mildot reticle. APV has adjustable objective...not sure about APT.
