I've been doing it for a looooong time. My son is a competitive skeet shooter. He usually goes through 12,000 - 15,000 rounds a year, plus what I might shoot along the way. I spend a lot of time at the reloading bench. crazy

12's and 20's. Started out loading 16ga on a Mec 600 in the mid-70's.

I've done a little shotshell loading myself. I guess I just like being self sufficient because I don't believe it saves much coin.

You are correct, because there's definitely a "break even" point .... and it takes a large quantity to get there. Most people who aren't shooting high volume (over 5,000 rds yearly) won't save much if any money after you figure in the cost of the reloader, etc.

Most folks are better off watching for quantity buys and stocking up during those specials.

Unless you are using reclaimed shot, its cheaper to buy loaded shells. It was worth it when 25 pound bags of shot was under 25 dollars but now its like 50 a bag. Mail order you can find it a little cheaper but shipping kills the deal.

We get shot several hundred pounds at a time through our local club. Wads 20,000 at a time. Like I said ... unless you're shooting in large quantities it isn't cost effective.

There are other benefits however. You can tailor loads to suit your needs. In the past we loaded 2.75" T shot loads that were running extremely fast to pass shoot ducks. And we load 3/4 and 7/8 ounce skeet loads that can't otherwise be obtained. Even in smaller quantities it can be beneficial to tailor loads to certain situations. But you're not going to save any money doing it.

I loaded 12, 16 and 20's for years, but as the price of components continued to rise, I found out that buying "ready mades" in bulk made a lot more economic sense. When I added in the time investment, I just couldn't justify it. I'm not a high volume shooter; casual skeet and trap, plus a bit of shot throwing at dove and quail each season, but definitely not enough to keep reloading. Sold all my reloading gear for the shotties and have been quite content with the quality and price of factory loadings.

Buy them by the pallet. It's cheaper.

I had a great boss when I was going to Angelo State. He owned a paper company. I managed his warehouse and stacked cases of paper 6 hours a day. the old bastard used to tell me I should pay him for all the muscles I gained during thel offseason from all of the paper cases I stacked. He had a pet load of 6's mixed with 9's he liked for dove hunting. During my down time he let me reload on the halves on the clock. We hunted every day after work on our secretaries husbands place 5 minutes from the warehouse, and I could bring all the friends I wanted. No matter how many people we had everyone killed a limit every day of season. The place was next to the country club water hazard and planted with milo. That was a damn good load, he liked it for close up doves and to reach on the white wings that flew over.
My old roommate tried to lease that place a few years ago. The old boy that ownes it said some douch bags from Dallas leased it for $3K a year and would probably only hunt once.
That's the last reloading I did. The 6 & 9 combo was a great load.

Several nights I cooked over 500 dove breasts for a party.

I had a Brittany and my roommate had a lab. We never had to say anything to them or get up off the cooler. They retrieved every dove to hand no matter how many guys were shooting. At the end of every day we would have a big pile of dove in front of us.

Good point. Especially 28 gauge.

I've been loading shot shells for a long time. 12ga and 20ga. Now I only reload 410's and 20's for my crane hunting

I load 12s, 20s, 28s and .410 bore.
The cost on the 12s is running about 4.50, the sub-gauges would be less.

I shoot a lot of clays and skeet but primarily I reload for consistency. Same powder, primer, wad, shot and hull. Same recoil, same shot speed.
It does save some time too, not having to hunt for the shell I want.

And that can make a TON of difference in competition. Been there, seen that.

Got the 12 and 20 gauge cleaned up and running, now got to get the rest of the supplies, luckily I have 40-50 # of shot 7 1/2 and 8. I live in Aransas Pass and not member of any clubs, so if any one hears of any deals please let me know.
I started loaded 20's in the late 60's and have been away from it since 72. Hopefully the old mind will still get it going again.
Thanks for the info

I use to shoot skeet and trap competitively and knew a bunch of guys who did it. I just knew it never to be a reliable source to use during a long day of shootings with rounds upon rounds. Seemed to be more malfunctioned shells in their ammo pocket than good shells. But who am I to say something, they could've not been doing it efficiently. I just bought by the pallet, Rio's.

All I can say is that you were shooting with a bunch of idiots or they were very distracted and irresponsible reloaders.

I've been to hundreds of competitive shoots. "Most" of the professionals I have known and still know use factory ammunition in competition and reloads to practice. Partially for reliability, but also because they were at .... well .... a greatly reduced cost. wink

I can say with no hesitation or doubt that I have loaded over 100,000 shotshells for 3 different gauges, and none, NONE have ever failed. Loading shotshells for skeet use is about the simplest task in the reloading world and unless the person gets in a hurry or gets distracted it is 99.99% reliable.

Yep, but I too see a lot of bad reloads on a clay course. Most are due to a bad crimp, seems like. All the little boolits fall out. Then there's the occasional one that sounds like a 3 1/2 mag goose load.

Like I said ..... poor reloading practices. wink

Perhaps I am more careful than others because most of my reloads go into my son's gun. It becomes a bit more important when your kid's skin is in the game.
