So I bought a case of Suprema 7.5, 1oz, 1315fps shells. I can't believe how many birds I'm wounding. Tonight I hit 11 and dropped 2. Out of those 9, 7 lost feathers and kept flying and 2 drifted in the woods on the neighbors property. Yesterday I dropped 5, lost 6. All of these were around 40 yards, same range I was dropping em left and right with Monarchs. Have any of yall had any problems with these before? I honestly think my kill percentage would be better if I was shooting bottom-of-the-barrel 1200fps trap loads

Just hit them in the head. Just takes one pellet. Seams like I hit more in the head with my 410 then my 20ga.

What choke? Have you actually patterned the load in your gun?

anybody can have an off day. lead the bird a little bit more.
also consider a bird dog. nothing helps more on lost birds than a great retriever.

What choke? Have you actually patterned the load in your gun? This! Faster shells normally don't pattern as good as a slower load. May take more choke.

It's a proven fact that shooting loads with speeds over about 1200 FPS will add to the amount of pellet distortion that occurs in the back of the shot string. Results are holes in your pattern, ragged-spreadout shot strings and more "fliers". depending on the wad and shot quality in the shell, this can become extreme the hotter the loads are.

Just a guess here but your pattern may be coming apart once the shot moves from supersonic to subsonic. I know it's a concern for some of the long range rifle shooters.

Err... Monarchs are rated higher at 1350fps... Could be a difference in wad construction (shock absorption) between the two. There's a lot of physics going on when a shell is fired and round pellets are horrible as far as aerodynamics are concerned. All I'm saying is the faster the load, the more variables enter into play as far as consistent patterning is concerned.

I haven't patterned it yet. I guess, in my limited 2 years of experience huntingn dove, if I hit em they usually go down. Ducks are a whole nuther story, but dove seem to go down pretty darn easy. As far as getting a dog, that's not really an option at this property. It's long and narrow, and if I don't drop birds dead, they sail over the fence into the neighbors property

Very good info on shot strings and everything else that was mentioned. Didn't really take that into consideration

I had this same problem and never took the speed into consideration. I have shot AA's out of my O/U for the entire 12 years that i've owned it, never anything else, i recently switched to Rio's, same shot size and weight, but 85 FPS faster than AA's, i was struggling really bad killing birds, and could not figure out why. I consider myself decent wing shooter, can normally kill a limit with less than 2 boxes of shells. I killed limits this weekend, but with 6.5 boxes of shells, i came home and jumped on the ole WWW and after reading a few articles, it dawned on me what was wrong , i feel i would have really improved my kill ratio had i switched to Light Modified and Modified!

restating what I have said before , and been roasted for ----- get a gun and shells that you like and DONT CHANGE------ gun or shells. Shoot the same shells for 5 yrs if they are working for you, same with the gun,,, I use 20ga o/u for dove, quail, ducks, have shot the same winchester shells for 10 yrs,,,,,, the old saying,,, dont fix it if it aint broke. So Monarch shells worked for you,,,, why would you change?? to save a $1 a box??? doesn't make any sense.

read stickchumker's post --------------- he changed shells,, went from 3 shells per bird ( which is terrible) to over 10 shells per bird with the new shells--------- his solution?? to change his chokes in his gun! I have to assume he posted that as comedy to give us all a smile.

I really don't think it's the shells with doves. I tend to agree with the off day comment. Doves are just too easy to kill with just about any load. From 1/2 ounce .410 to 11/4 twelves--if you can half way shoot; the shells make little difference. Case in point-watch guys smoke clays in Sporting Clay shoots with 1200 fps shells. As to 6 1/2 boxes to get a limit--that's a glasses problem.

I just wanna hunt where Stickchunker does!
Shot speed, wads vs. cups, etc. can make SOME difference but not as much as what is being talked about. If you have a load you like, stick with it...confidence can get you as far as equipment. Quick story: I used to compete long ago and at one time was in love with the, then new Active shells w/ 8 1/2 shot. Felt I couldn't miss. For whatever reason I went to a shoot w/ 'other' shells and did poorly, blamed it on the shells....got home and patterned them vs. the Actives and they patterned better! Lesson learned. P_102

I guess i should clarify, that was 6.5 boxes of shells to kill 30 Mourning doves (2 days Limits, Friday & Saturday) and 10 Ring Necks!

I know it sounds like heresy to some folks, but I prefer steel shot. It patterns better because of very little deformation, and you get many more pellets per ounce. Dove aren't hard to kill, they are hard to hit. More pellets means more hits.
I also like the fact that I'm not shooting my food full of lead pellets.

I gotta admit, never considered steel for dove, didn't even know they made it in other than heavy duck loads, but if they do the argument makes sense, especially at shorter yardages. P_102

I prefer good quality shells... and I prefer Fiochi 6 shot at 1350 fps... and a lot of folks like the 7.5's I get it, but since going back to 6's which has always been my late season preference, I don't have any feather=lacking birds fly off... they are drt....
I'd never shoot 6 boxes at a time, I'd quit and figure what I was doing wrong....

didn't even know they made it in other than heavy duck loads P_102 I actually shot sporting clays with steel shot at a hunting club north of Chicago because they had fishing ponds on the property. Had never heard of such a thing before that.

Cheaper loads hqve less or no antimony in the lead. Pure lead flattens and flys erratic. Good loads have up to 10% antimony. Also slower loads open up faster and pattern better.

I've always had good luck with the Remington Heavy Dove loads in 7.5, or 8 shot

went from 3 shells per bird ( which is terrible) Thats actually great, I would bet that 3/bird would put you in the top 10% of dove hunters.
