Hey folks,

I'm heading to the northeast to hunt and am trying to get the scoop on NYC's laws regarding shotguns. I'll be spending a couple nights there with it and need to learn the laws.

Any of y'all know the scoop?

In NYC if they know you have them you will most likely be arrested for not complying with their laws regarding firearm ownership and licensing, especially if your staying there. NJ can be just as bad. If at all possible I would fly into Philly or hartford and drive from there it will add a little to your trip but be much safer and I wouldnt stay in the city at all with them. Most people will tell you to fill up your tank on the PA side of the NJ/PA border and dont stop until your in CT or upstate NY.

Im so thankful I dont live up there anymore.

If I'm not mistaken isn't illegal to own a firearm inside the city limits of NYC, or at least with the proper paperwork?

Look on NRA-ILA website. Since you are staying in NYC you I think you fall under the requirement of needing to have a permit issued by NYPD to have your shotgun with you. If you were just flying through not an issue but as soon as you pick it up at baggage claim you are in possession and in the rabbit hole.

Ship it to you hunting destination and pick it up there.

WOW, this is from the NRA website:

Special advisory for New York & New Jersey airports: Despite federal law that protects travelers, authorities at JFK, La Guardia, Newark, and Albany airports have been known to enforce state and local firearm laws against airline travelers who are passing through their jurisdictions. In some cases, even persons traveling in full compliance with federal law have been arrested or threatened with arrest. FOPA's protections have been substantially narrowed by court decisions in certain parts of the country, particularly in the Northeast. Persons traveling through New York and New Jersey airports may want to consider shipping their firearms to their final destinations rather than bringing them through airports in these jurisdictions.

Shipping might be cheaper than paying for it as a checked bag, but of course a hassle.

When I went on my African Safari a few years back I had a several day layover in NYC. Their gun laws where one reason I decided to just rent a rifle from my Outfitter versus the cost and hassle of shipping or flying with it. Worked out much cheaper in the long run. My .02 cents is that a shotgun is a shotgun... can you rent or borrow one at your hunting destination?

I'd definitely look into borrowing a shotgun.

Ship it to your hunting destination. Not difficult at all.

I have a close friend who is a LEO in NYC. Do not, under ANY circumstances, fly into the airport with a firearm. You'll have a 50/50 chance of getting it seized and at the very least getting fined.

Do as others have suggested. Either avoid the place altogether (best option) or rent a gun at your hunting site or outfitter.

Flying into there sounds like Mutha Russia 2.0!

It's a whole different mindset as far as the local laws are concerned. But here in the USA, the laws are the laws and whether we agree with them or not they should be enforced as written. NY just has very strict gun laws. Comparing it to TX is like daylight and dark.

Someone was connecting through LGA. They connection was delayed until the next day. The passengers were told to pick up bags. The guy did and when he declared the next day the arrested him for illegal gun.

Just ship it

I think if you are reading a gun magazine that you can be arrested.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

Yet another reason to avoid NYC and all of New Jersey. And Illinois, come to think of it.

NJ is not as bad if you know the laws. I wouldnt have a issue bringing in a shotgun to hunt NJ. Since in NJ you can get a temp license from the state police before you get there.

Thats the problem with the NE, the FOPA as written is clear that is isn't illegal. The commie cities just ignore that and enforce local law over federal.

It is sad for me to watch my native PA going the way more and more of the NE. It is still a big hunting and fishing state but who knows in the coming years.....I am happy to be in TX now.
