Alligator gar are North Americas largest predatory freshwater fish thats species has survived the test of time living for over 147 million years on the planet since the beginning of the Cretacious Period. In Texas their primary diet consists of roughfish such as Smallmouth Buffalo, Common Carp, Gizzard Shad, Freshwater Drum, Talapia, and Mullet. They play one of the most important roles in the ecosystem being a top level predator and even a keystone species. At SharkBaitTV and Catching Dinosaurs we are 100% comitted to catch and release and promoting this amazing fish species protection. Alligator Gar need a gamefish status in Texas, for too long they have been killed off being classified as roughfish when they should be considered some of the most important species in our waters.

Yeah I would have to agree. They're pretty rare. Even in Texas, you really only find them in the eastern part of the state. Very cool video.

Most of the rivers and lakes in South Texas still have them.

Only way I say they are rare is of way under cooked. Numners have decreased in some areas but not others. I have caught them in lakes and rivers in Texas and Mississippi. Believe they are still commercially fished in LA. They can be good eating if cleaned and prepared right.
Agree they are a valuable resource but rare not so much.

Why should they be considered one of the most important species in our waters?

Why should they be considered one of the most important species in our waters? Because they are native and they get little respect. Bass and catfish are great but not in any danger what so ever.

top level predators play the most important roles in the ecosystem, without alligator gar Texas would not have nearly as good of fishing as it does have, top level predators keep the ecosystem healthy by removing the slowest and weakest genes from the environment leaving the best and most healthy genes to reproduce.
nothing rare about them where I'm at. interesting because the german couple i took 3 days ago traveled 6000+ miles to come catch them because they think they are rare. js
