Bucks quit moving in the daylight after the 96 degree temps yesterday. Few does only. Did find a couple of bucks on two different TC right at daylight. One group at a blind I had been hunting the other was at a feeder closer to where I hunted this morning. Both groups were gone well before sunup. Nothing was in before dark last night at any location on a feeder or blind.

Promised the kids we would go to the Come and Take it Festival in Gonzales this weekend. I might get an evening hunt with my cousins, I may just hang out in the beer garden tent. I'm headed to Laredo last week of October for annual doe thinning and maybe a buck if I can find a good one. I have a big hunt planned with my son, bil and nephew in November. The family and I went to that as well. Nothing much new but but both the wife and I somehow get roped into volunteering help with something. I'm probably going to head out in December and go hunt with the kids then. We camped out where lake wood used to be. The dam broke and sent all the water down stream I hear. We saw a young 8 chasing does in the camp ground though. It was a good time had by all anyway. Kids found an old rifle in the dry lake bed. We tried to give it to the park guys but they told us we could keep it. It's in pretty bad shape.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

Saturday morning I can't complain. Saw a lot of deer just no shooters, even with all the wind it didn't seem to bother them that much. They were just a little bit more on edge than usual.

Friday in all the heat was my best day. Saw 11 bucks in the morning and 8 that evening. Very few does right now. This weekend was a bit slower with fewer bucks and deer total. Did have a mature buck show up that had not been here since Feb. He was in after midnight but at least is roaming. This time of the year I see one to two new bucks per week. Coolest morning of the season will be in the morning here. I hope to be able to sit.

Stuck a 128lb boar Saturday morning at Big Oak. Short track for his dog Bagley. This morning was nice but it was an inconsistent wind and made it tough.

Went this morning and it was non stop game. I had deer, before daylight seeing just shadows, then hogs, then more hogs, then deer, turkeys, but what was funny was a little eight point that put a stare down on three hogs, and the deer won, and when the hogs turned and ran the buck didn't even go over and eat the corn, he just proceeded on his way. Saw so many deer I didn't even care to count after a dozen. Saw 6 bucks two shooters, but they were young so I was meat hunting so I took a doe with my crossbow, and could have had another but I would have had to reload the crossbow and there were too many eyeballs out there. One advantage of my old compound and recurve. The "Rage" broadhead who so many on another thread seem to hate did it's job again. Twenty yards, clean passthru and easy to follow blood trail for about 40 yards resulting in a stone dead deer. Great morning to be out in the woods.

Yes sir, While I was sitting there waiting for the deer to leave so I could go track my doe I finally decided to make some noise to get them to move along after about 45 minutes. I knew the deer was down because three does were sniffing the air in the direction the doe I shot ran. I was in for a surprise though when my hunting partner showed up and told me he only saw one hog and 2 deer, and they were too far away. I guess I had all the game on my part of the ranch.

Deer have shut down daylight movement here the past 2 or 3 days now for the most part and calm to swirling winds are not helping one bit either no matter where I sit. This morning it go so foggy I could not see 35 yards at most then the winds would switch from West to South to East and anywhere in between every few minutes. So when two bucks did not like the scent drifts they kept getting and left, I eased out and left. Most evening hunts the deer are not in front of me till almost dark if not dark. The mornings are done by sunrise. The bright moon is not helping along with those humid/muggy morning. Night time pictures in the feed pens still show good numbers from 9pm till 5am. I brushed in a new ground blind that I backed into a clump of Blackbrush and Lime Prickly Ash for N/NW/NE winds during midday yesterday. I have been feeding it for two days now. They ate all the corn overnight so that was a good sign. Gives me one more option to hunt.

After I went Comanche moon on those turkeys week before last I haven't been out. Work and kids has kept me out of the blind....hope to get out tomorrow but gosh dang it's hot and the moon is getting full.

Full moon this morning and it didn't set until almost sunrise. The deer didn't move until around 8:30 and they completely ignored the corn I had spread on the road. Saw mostly does and fawns although they didn't stick around to see if any were bucks, but they all went for the oaks and the acorns. Seemed they would have fed all night and wouldn't be moving much but they did. We need some cold weather, just too darn hot.

Dang hot is right. Variable swirling winds have been horrible the last 3 mornings. One direction when I leave the barn and then another when I get to the stand only to change right at daylight. Throw in fog and it has been tough.

Had a spike come in right at daylight, fed for a few min. Kept looking in the brush then ran off. Small pig came out.
Watched it for a few min then drew back, waited for the broadside shot and let it fly.
Dressed 58# she will make a good eater

I have killed all my archery kills the last week of October. I saw 1 doe, 1 fawn and 5 gobblers who decided to roost in a Live Oak tree about 70 yards from me.

I've shot my best archery bucks around the new year. Cold weather brings them to food.

That is one of my favorite times to hunt as well, but the only problem is if you are trophy hunting, the really nice bucks are pretty broken up by then. I've seen some studs that I never saw before during the season, and one in particular that had an entire one side broken off at the brow tine.

When I was a young teenager I shot a buck on late December that I only got a look at 1 side of his rack.....big 8 point, 11" G2's, 4 1/2" bases, I pulled the trigger He rolled and that's when I saw he had broken off ever point on his right side He would have been a hell of a buck though He had 6" brows, 16" inside spread, 11" g2 7" G3 Can't remember what the main beams were Don't remember the age but he dressed 148 lbs post rut
