I hunt hard every weekend for DOVE during season on sorghum fields, I do like 6 hunts per year for quail in the fall, once every other year I might hunt ducks. In season I turn to hunt whitetails and turn sometimes to quail.

I used to own a springer spaniel that I trained myself while I was in college, she was a great dog, did everything I needed, I put in a lot of hours and field time. I been mostly around springers and love their kindness and disposition, they are easy to train (in my opinion). I have never trained pointing dogs, and training flushers should be in my mind simpler. Since I dove hunt mostly, I dont see the need for a pointer. I love springers but most are kind of over hyper. I have no experience with other breeds.

NOw Im 40, divorced and although I do work at an office 8am-8pm, I have a friend that raises birds, including quail. But I dont have a large yard and will have to kinda really commit to training them. Im having my doubts about two things

should I try a different breed, should I go the finished dog way...

Yeah I would stick to spaniels and finished. Sounds like work schedule would be tough on a new pup.

Agreed, if you are familiar with springers and like them, go find the best field bed springer you can and jump back in. Boykins are also very popular these days. There is a large thread on Boykins in this forum.

Go with your heart. Not with your head.

I was going to suggest lab from the description of what you hunt, BUT since you have experience and know the breed -- stick with what you know and love.

Springers, Labs or Boykins for flushing work. The other to consider is a well bred English Cocker. All will also work well on waterfowl. The smaller ones are cheaper to feed and easier to keep inside. They will all be a bit hyper until they get older.
I personally would consider a Brittany. I like the dogs and love to watch them work. I believe they are a good versatile dog

French Brittany is always the answer to these types of questions.

I would not get a lab from your description of the types of hunts you go on. if you were mainly waterfowl and dove then I'd say lab all the way. I think you need a Boykin. They have a strong retrieving desire but can handle the heat in the dove field and also are great for quail. My good friend who I hunt with 2-3 times a week with starting in September through January has a Boykin and he is dove fetching machine and a natural upland dog. If I mainly hunted dove and quail I would no doubt look at getting a Boykin.

i don't know a lot about the Springers so I can't really comment on them but I agree with the above statements about you going that route from your past experience.

For Boykins try Texas Trace kennels. I think they are down close to Houston? I met the owners and really liked the dogs. Hard working and a lot of fun to watch.
